Job Description

The Section of Newborn Critical Care , Department Pediatrics, invites applications for a full-time Neonatologist. The successful candidate will have 70% time for clinical activities and 30% allocated to administration, research and education. The non-clinical Care Pillar Distribution (total 30%) may be tailored to the profile of the selected candidate. Interest in the areas of Neonatal hemodynamics and Targeted neonatal echocardiography, Nutrition/GI Health, Complex care, artificial intelligence/Health Economics research, or with additional skills in Neonatal Neurocritical Care would be beneficial. Candidates must have completed residency training in Pediatrics and received certification in Pediatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or equivalent and must also have completed Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine accredited by the RCPSC or equivalent. In addition, the successful candidate must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.Neonatal Care is provided at 5 Hospitals within the Calgary Zone: Level III Neonatal Critical Care with surgical, neurocritical and cardiac care at a stand-alone NICU at Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH), Level III Perinatal Critical Care at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC), and Level II Neonatal Critical Care at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, Rockyview General Hospital and South Health Campus. The Neonatal Program includes a nationally recognized Neonatal Follow-up Clinic (NFC) at the ACH and a RCPSC-accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Residency Program, and AFC programs in NNCC and TNE. A busy transport service (Southern Alberta Neonatal Transport Service) and a Maternal Fetal Medicine Consultation service provide comprehensive care.The Section of Neonatology provides neonatal care to Southern Alberta, which has an annual birth rate of approximately 24,000. There are a total of 126 Level II and III beds amongst five (5) Calgary Zone Acute Care Hospitals, admitting an average of 3000 neonates annually and 2900+ discharges yearly. Additionally, ACH provides patient care to Southern Alberta, SE British Columbia, and SW Saskatchewan, with a catchment area of approximately 2.5 million people.The Department of Pediatrics has more than 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Many members are also part of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute for Child and Maternal Health (ACHRI) or other Faculty research institutes. Refer to the Department of Pediatrics website at www.ucalgary.ca/paed for more information about the Department, its faculty, services, and accomplishments.The successful candidate will be based at the FMC level 3 facility with additional clinical duties at the ACH level 4 facility, and at one of the three level 2 NICUs or the Neonatal Follow Up Clinic or maternal fetal medicine clinics. The successful candidate will assist with the neonatal transport service at Calgary zone NICU.The NICU at the Foothills Medical Center is the only Level 3 perinatal center in Southern Alberta. There are 1000 admissions yearly at FMC and is one of the busiest NICU in Canada. The FMC NICU is currently a 39 bed unit with expertise in ELBW care, TNE and on-unit PDA ligation. Educational training opportunities include onsite, embedded Simulation room as well as access to Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Residents and Fellows and Pediatric Residents. The unit is also supported by an onsite transport team (SANTS), Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, and Pediatricians, and patient care is managed divided amongst three teams daily. Currently, the development of a two-level, 50+ bed NICU is in progress.The successful candidate will also provide service at the ACH NICU is a level 4 facility with 14 single family room neonatal beds, and provides surgical, neurocritical, cardiac and complex care services to all of Southern Alberta. The ACH NICU has access to an ECLS program based in the ACH PICU. A 24/7 Neonatal neurocritical service and full neonatal surgical services are present in the NICU. Educational training opportunities include mentoring Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Residents and Fellows, Pediatric Residents, and clinical clerks. There are two Neonatal Nurse Practitioners to provide support for clinical service and QI collaboration. The successful candidate will assist with further developing this level 4 facility, working alongside the interdisciplinary team as well as a strong and collaborative consultant team. Training in Neonatal hemodynamics and targeted neonatal echocardiography, Neonatal nutrition, Neurocritical care, Neonatal Follow up or Developmental Pediatrics is an asset.The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
