Join us!Job SummaryThe Seaman is responsible for maintaining the whole ship. The incumbent will perform various duties related to cargo securement as well as repairs and cleanup. This person also has responsibilities in emergencies. This person is assigned aboard the George Alexandre Lebel and will also do deck watch.Main Responsibilities

  • Work shifts as a helmsman
  • Maintain a steady course, properly execute all rudder orders
  • Communicate utilizing navigational terms relating to heading and steering
  • Perform general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in the deck department
  • Maintain ship’s metal structures by chipping, scraping, cleaning, priming, and painting
  • Clean, maintain, and repair the hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear, and smoke stack
  • Use and perform maintenance on lifeboats, rescue boats and life rafts, and emergency and damage control gear
  • Perform all operations connected with the launching of lifesaving equipment
  • Operate deck machinery, such as the windlass or winches while mooring or unmooring, and operate cargo gear
  • Look for obstructions in path of vessel
  • Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear and stationary rigging
Working Conditions
  • Primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions
  • Lift 50 pounds (40% of the time) and regularly perform physical tasks (60% of the time)
  • Extended overnight stays away from home
Requirements
  • Bridge Watchman Certificate
  • Identifies risks and anticipates impacts to ensure a safe and secure environment
  • Makes informed and timely decisions to get things done
  • Collaborates with others
  • Follows safety procedures, information security instructions and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles to lead by example
  • Shares timely information within and across functions to get things done effectively
  • Is skilled with tools and paint
  • Has technical knowledge to moor the vessel, make knots and splices
  • Has knowledge of ropes and their characteristics
TrainingThe incumbent receives marine emergency and Marine Basic First Aid training.This is a unionized position.
