The positionThe Principal Chemist is hands-on and leads the entire product development process. Responsible for delivering market-leading sustainability focused launches within natural cosmetics and Natural Health Products (NHP). The Principal Chemist is an expert in cosmetic formulations and a generalist in packaging, regulatory and quality. Reporting directly to the Director of Researchamp; Development, the Principal Chemist is up to date on natural ingredient innovations, sustainable packaging and cosmetic science primarily in skin, hair and soap formulations. This position is part of a small, dynamic team whose mission is to address customer pain points with superior quality products and make their daily routines more enjoyable.What you #39;ll be doing

  • Prototyping and Scale Up
    • Lead the entire product development process from raw material sourcing, formulation, testing, packaging compatibility, process innovation, and scale-up to achieve launch milestones
  • Testing and Documentation
    • Prepare and coordinate prototype batches for testing stability, safety, micro, claims, and marketing evaluation. Ensure documentation storage and systems are well set up and maintained for reference and accessibility
  • Blue Sky and Ingredient Innovation
    • Experiment with your own ideas to build a creative bank of future innovations. Build relationships with suppliers, attend conferences, and conduct scientific research to source new ingredients that build a quality branded product experience.
  • Existing Product Improvement and Troubleshooting
    • Troubleshoot and reformulate to improve existing formulas through bench trials. Assist in the investigation of product/process deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
  • Leadership
    • Provide coaching and development opportunities for your team.
  • Technical Advisor
    • Create and review technical documents. Provide technical expertise and regulatory knowledge to sales/marketing, customer inquiries, manufacturing and Quality Control as needed.
Does this sound like you
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher
  • 10+ years experience in cosmetics and NHP (skin care, hair care, soap). Strong preference for natural formulation experience
  • Strong technical and practical knowledge of raw materials, emulsions and surfactants
  • Experience in quality with knowledge of analytical instruments and test methods for conducting chemical and physical testing of cosmetic applications
  • Strong team player, creativity and leadership skills
  • A self- motivated individual, organized, detail oriented who can multi-task, and meet dynamic timelines
  • Have led or been an integral part of a team that drives innovation.
