Our mandate as a Canada Port Authority, as set out by the Canada MarineAct, is to enable Canada #39;s trade objectives, ensuring goods are moved safelyand responsibly through the Port of Vancouver. That means providinginfrastructure and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of marine trafficand cargo within the port. It also means we carry out reviews of proposed activitiesand developments on federal port lands and waters to determine whether aproject can go ahead without impacts to the environment and community thatcannot be mitigated.We are committed to diversity, inclusion, andsustainability. We believe in creating a workplace that reflects the richnessof our community and empowers all employees to reach their full potential.The data engineer is instrumental in providingtechnical support and high availability for the enterprise databases, datawarehouses and related technology. Using a deep knowledge or experience inimplementing scalable analytics, BI/ reporting solutions, and common servicessuch as Data Governance and Data Quality in hybrid data architectures (cloudand on-prem), this position will be a strong advocate of data modelingmethodologies, data engineering and analytics best practices.This position provides exceptional client-centered serviceon a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups. This involves working onmultiple projects involving the implementation of new or enhancement ofexisting systems, solutions, and processes.What you do:- Participate inanalysis, planning and developing detailed roadmaps for the modernization ofthe existing port authority data platform. Work closely with the seniorsystems analyst -databases on the implementation of roadmaps.- Be the technical ownerof organization #39;s data lake; including both on-premises (SQL server enterprise)and cloud-based environments (Azure/AWS).- Work closely with themanager, data infrastructure to architect, create, design, implement, test datamodels and database management systems.- Support the fullanalytics cycle of data design, ETL development, validating and reporting(either Agile or Waterfall). Help improve overall design and deliverystandards.- Collaborate withexternal resources, ensuring the data architectures and standard are beingadhered to through proper knowledge transfer, code versioning, governance, andquality assurance.- Ensure all upgrades,additions, and changes to VFPA #39;s data infrastructure, tools and reportingportals are consistent in supporting the IS department #39;s service levelcommitments to the organization.- Research newtechnologies, implement proofs of concept/MVPs and make recommendations tobuild scalable and supportable infrastructure, as appropriate.- Perform root-causeanalysis for service interruption and develop solutions to complex technicalproblems and take appropriate urgent actions.- Configure, perform andmonitor system level backups and restore via enterprise level backup solutions.- Proactively maintainsdata infrastructure: database servers, performance monitoring, securityconfiguration, database software (SQL) - installation, patching, upgrades,decommissioning etc.- Develop feasible databackup and recovery procedures to prevent data loss - high availability anddisaster recovery procedures.- Implement and maintaindatabase security (user access, roles and privileges) and audit functions.- Plan for storage andcapacity for raw data sources ingestion into the landing zone of VFPA datalake.- Monitor, tune andoptimize the performance of databases.- Create and updatedatabase objects.- Participate in thecollection, extraction, analysis, and documentation of analytics solutions fromdesign through to code level.- Create/enhance anddocument logical and physical database models.- Create VFPA semanticlayer views for reporting/dashboard and analytics.- Participate in formingstrategies for VFPA data availability, security, archival, recovery andmigration.- Build and deployvisualizations/reports using PowerBI or Tableau to either on-premises and/orcloud environments.What you bring:- Must have a degree in Information Technology from a recognizedpost-secondary educational institution.- Minimum of 5 years of senior data development experience ina mid to large corporate enterprise environment.Must have demonstratedexperience with the following:- Physicaland logical design of database architecture for relational databases, datawarehouses and data lakes.- Databaseoptimization, data replication, database recovery and performance tuning.- Clouddata platforms (Azure and AWS) along with on-premises data integration.- Solidskills with the Microsoft BI technology stack (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, SQL Server,TSQL, MDX, DAX, Power BI, Power Pivot, Power Query).- Experiencewith Azure DevOps or TFS as code version controlling tool.- Understandingof on-premises and on cloud dashboard deployments.- Orchestrationof the modern data pipelines for continuous delivery.- DataModeling/ Dimension modeling - start schemas, CDC etc.- Functionalprograming languages (R, Python etc.), APIs and web services.- Datasecurity principles, efficiency, quality and governance.- Complextechnical and architectural documentation skills.What we offer:We offer a robust total rewards packageincluding:- Market-competitive basesalaries and variable incentive plan.- Generousand inclusive benefits offering including retirement benefits plan.- Flexible remote workprogram.- Earned time off program.- Paid vacation andpersonal care leave.- Learning, development,and advancement opportunities.- Onsitegym with towel service in a national landmark in the heart of Vancouver #39;swaterfront.- Friendly, unique, andrespectful workplace.Location: Vancouver, CanadaJob type: Bargaining Unit,Full-Time, Permanent, Hybrid (Limited)Working environment: Normalworking office conditions and participation in 7x24 on-call support.This is Canadian-based employment,and it is expected that all employees maintain legal entitlement to work inCanada.At the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, we are dedicated toemployment equity and a workplace reflective of the diversity of our portcommunity.
