  • provide group leadership, technical guidance and coordination of Fire Ranger crews
  • assist in the planning and implementation of the regional fire management program that includes training, prevention, prescribed burning, suppression and equipment maintenance and development
  • promote and enhance the safety management system
  • work in progressively challenging fire line assignments such as sector leader or division supervisor
  • act in the Sector Response Officer function as required
Please note: The position will require physical ability to meet the demands of fire suppression activities and the ability to travel and work for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.How do I qualifyMandatory
  • You are qualified at a minimum of Fire Incident Commander Level 5 (requires Initial Attack Incident Commander Course SP300 or equivalent).
  • You possess or have the ability to obtain a restricted radio-telephone operators certificate.
  • You must have a valid class G drivers licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid drivers licence upon being hired.
Technical expertise:
  • You have knowledge of and ability to assimilate new forest fire suppression strategy, tactics and techniques in a variety of fire control circumstances and ability to understand and meet objectives with available resources.
  • You have knowledge of aerial operations and fire behaviour observation and predictions.
  • You have knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain forest fire suppression and related equipment such as pumps and chainsaws.
  • You have knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislation such as the Forest Fires Prevention Act and other relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
Analytical, planning and coordination skills:
  • You can effectively formulate field plans, set initial attack and suppression priorities, assess relevant factors of a rapidly changing fire emergency environment and coordinate multiple agencies on-site to provide an effective and efficient response.
Group leadership and people skills:
  • You have proven group leadership skills to assign tasks to personnel, monitor quality and report on the status of work and assess performance of assigned staff.
  • You have strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills to provide leadership to staff, prepare and deliver presentations/training; prepare written materials, conduct investigation interviews, brief staff and clients and relay information and instructions clearly and calmly during hectic/extreme fire situations.
General skills:
  • You have the ability to use geographic information systems (GIS) and global position systems (GPS).
  • You have working knowledge of computer applications and word processing, databases, internet, electronic mail software and decision support systems.
  • You have an understanding of worker and supervisor responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
