We offer a work environment where team members are truly valued, and have what they need to thrive in their role and make a meaningful impact.Position SummaryAn exciting opportunity exists in our Metals Division in Fort Saskatchewan for a Supervisor, Laboratory Technologist.Reporting to the Manager, Analytical Services, the Supervisor, Laboratory Technologist provides front line leadership and direction to the analytical technologists, coordinating their daily activities to continually meet the business objectives of safe, reliable, and timely delivery of routine and non-routine laboratory analysis.Accountabilities

  • Plan, organize, and lead the day-to-day operations of the analytical technologists, supporting site operations on a 0 to 3-month time frame.
  • Ensure technologists are assigned to tasks for which they are trained and competent to perform.
  • Provide clear direction to the technologists and communicate priorities to meet the requirements of the Operating areas.
  • Review laboratory analytical results and ensure stakeholder requirements are met. Monitor and respond to emerging or potential laboratory operating concerns or erroneous data. Ensure prompt resolution or escalation.
  • Monitor laboratory operating requirements and performance expectations, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Implement appropriate intervention when required.
  • Coordinate calibration and maintenance activities of laboratory instruments and equipment and ensure the accurate use of analytical reference standards.
  • Support analytical quality, throughput, efficiency and cost performance initiatives.
  • Participate in the analytical services budgeting process, identifying instrument/equipment and other resource needs.
  • Schedule and coordinate work activities of laboratory technologists, monitoring such work for technical accuracy, adequacy, timeliness and compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development, review and implementation of Sherritt and Corefco analytical laboratory standards and procedures to deliver zero harm to employees, the environment and neighboring communities.
  • Investigate, evaluate and compile information as necessary to support process, environment and/or safety incident investigations as required or directed.
  • Establish and maintain a high level of employee performance via effective communication, leadership field presence, guidance, and demonstrated behaviors.
  • Monitor analytical technologist productivity, evaluate performance, and provide constructive feedback, coaching and mentoring to develop laboratory technologists. Ensure performance management expectations are understood, adhered to, and appropriate human resources policies are followed.
  • Develop and implement operational excellence plans and initiatives to foster continuous improvement.
  • Lead, facilitate and/or participate in weekly management meetings with analytical technologists and coordinate the weekly laboratory Key Performance Indicators.
  • Embed best operating practices into the day-to-day activities of the analytical technologists. Review, revise and support development of operating procedures, ensuring continuous improvement, relevance, and accuracy of procedures and operating instructions.
  • Support the improvement of the laboratory safety program, taking active steps to identify lab safety deficiencies, ensuring corrective actions are taken, and enforcing safe work practices.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Diploma-qualified (Chemical Technology or similar)
  • 5 plus years’ experience in an analytical lab setting.
  • Understanding of continuous quality improvement programs, relevant ISO standards and the lab’s QMS.
  • Planning experience (0 – 3-month time frame).
  • Customer service skills with good statistical and data analysis skills.
  • Lean Management.
  • Public speaking/presentations.
