Job Description

124 Griffin Rd E, Cochrane, AB T4C 2B9, Canada Req #196May 5, 2021We are looking for an operator with a minimum 3-years experience in a parks environment. The successful candidate has at least one of these certificates: Diploma in Horticulture, Turf Management Certificate, Sports Field Operators Certificate I and II, CPSI Playground Certificate, ISA Arborist Certificate, Landscape Gardener.Cochrane proudly maintains approximately 9% of its land as parks and open spaces. Residents and visitors enjoy nearly three dozen parks (many with playgrounds), summer fishing in trout ponds, outdoor skating in winter, and over 70 kilometers of pathways all year round. The team also maintains three cemeteries, many sports fields and dog off-leash areas. You will work with the team to contribute to the parks and open spaces in Cochrane.POSITION SUMMARYReporting to the Manager, Parks and Open Spaces, and receiving daily supervision from Parks and Open Spaces Coordinator this position is responsible for the maintenance and inventory control of the floral areas, outdoor rinks, parks and open spaces, cemeteries, sports fields, playgrounds, pathways, historical resource site, downtown streetscapes, skateboard park and river and stream riparian areas to ensure the cleanliness, safe operation and any maintenance or minor repairs are addressed. The incumbent supports the training and mentoring of seasonal staff during the summer months to ensure that day to day functions are followed and refers unusual problems or policy matters to the Coordinator.Key Accountabilities:1. Performs the day to day maintenance and operation of the section’s areas of responsibilities. (Outdoor rinks, parks and open spaces, cemeteries, sports fields, playgrounds, pathways, irrigation systems, historical resource site, downtown streetscapes, skateboard park and river and stream riparian areas) Examples of duties are: mowing, weed trimming, garbage and litter pick up, grave digging, tree pruning, sports field marking, snow removal, and irrigation diagnosis and repairs.2. Performs construction and maintenance tasks; operates a power saw and brush cutter at ground level; falls and bucks small trees and performs related park forestry operations.3. Performs construction and maintenance tasks pertaining to sport field operations, including ball diamonds, soccer/rugby pitches and courts sports. Ensures that scheduled users have access to sports fields; locks and unlocks parks, answers questions from the public and sports players regarding use sports fields and park regulations.4. Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as: single and tandem axle trucks, skid steer loader, backhoe, tandem trailers, bucket truck, tractors and snow removal equipment.5. Ensures all administrative duties of the position are performed (checklists, inventory, purchase orders and reports).6. Provides the day-to-day coaching and leadership of the Section’s seasonal staff in job duties and Town policies.7. Responds and investigates elevated customer inquiries and participates in resolving operational concerns.8. Assists with tenders related to contracted work until completion related to annual Parks projects.9. Performs parks and playground inspections for the purpose of safety, operational efficiencies, data collection, life cycling and inventory control10.Provides input with the preparation of the annual operational budget and any capital expenditures required in the Parks and Open Spaces facilities. Fiscally responsible for day-to-day expenses incurred in the operation and maintenance of the Parks and Open Spaces section.11.Ensures all work is performed in accordance with workplace health and safety standards and that all Town policies and procedures and provincial or federal legislation is adhered to.12.Remains current in all certification required for the position and pursues further formal training in the areas relevant to the responsibilities of the position.13.Maintains equipment and hand tools utilized in the performance of the section’s tasks.14.Participates in the on-call rotation and provides emergency assistance when required.QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIESEducation and ExperienceRequired:

  • One or more of these certificates: Diploma in Horticulture, Turf Management Certificate, Sports Field Operators Certificate I and II, CPSI Playground Certificate, ISA Arborist Certificate, Landscape Gardener
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in a parks environment
  • Experience operating and maintaining equipment
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic problem-solving skills
  • Horticultural/Arborist/Sportsfield/Irrigation/Cemetery/Landscaping experience
Preferred:
  • Municipal experience
Skills and AbilitiesRequired:
  • Physically able to perform required duties
  • The ability to direct and lead others
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in performing routine maintenance, landscaping and construction tasks
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks
  • Basic computer skills
Certifications, Licenses and/or DesignationsRequired:
  • Requires a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License;
  • Clean Criminal Record, including vulnerable sector security clearance
  • One or more of these certificates: Diploma in Horticulture, Turf Management Certificate, Sports Field Operators Certificate I and II, CPSI Playground Certificate, ISA Arborist Certificate, Landscape Gardener
