This position is an active member of the Library & Learning Commons Public Services Team with circulation and reference service duties.Position Competencies

Duties & Responsibilities1. Catalogue and classify library materials in all formats and media types: import and edit records, conforming to local library policies and procedures; perform original cataloguing according to current cataloguing rules (AACR2/RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification tables.2. Develops and implements guidelines, strategies and workflows to decolonize and review metadata to ensure neutrality and inclusivity in the library catalogue.3. Maintain the integrity and consistency of the North Island College library catalogue add, edit, delete bibliographic records of books, periodicals, videos, electronic and other materials, adhering to Machine Readable format (MARC) and where required, evaluate MARC record formats provided by vendors and establish routines for batch loads and removal of bibliographic records.4. In consultation with, and according to established protocols of the BC Electronic Library Network, prepare and submit North Island College library catalogue holdings for inclusion in provincial union catalogues, as well as regular uploads to Ebsco for Discovery content.5. Manage and troubleshoot modules of the integrated library system (ILS): library catalogue, acquisitions, circulation, cataloguing, reserves; provide centralized system maintenance and support; collaborate in planning and execution of system upgrades.6. Maintain close contact with college Business Applications Solutions (BAS), Information Technology (IT) and ILS vendor on matters relating to software functionality (upgrades, customizations, patron records, etc.)7. Produce and customize system-generated reports, such as overdue notices, bill lists, bibliographies, statistics, hold lists, new material lists, item labels, as required.8. Support annual collection inventory and fiscal year end activities.9. Diagnose and resolve technological issues relating to library specific software and electronic resources (mobile apps, link resolvers, proxy server, access to licensed materials, etc.)10. Perform maintenance of research database interfaces by customizing features and branding as directed by the Librarians.11. Maintain external contacts with such groups as professional cataloguers, ILS user groups, and vendors of digital/electronic products.12. Create and maintain the library CV reserve collection.13. Maintains and updates the Cataloging and Systems User Manual.14. Ensures that backfill or relief for the position has the current knowledge and understanding of the required duties and responsibilities of the position as assigned.15. Provide reference and research assistance to library users.16. Performs circulation and public services tasks including opening & closing procedures, circulation, collecting fines, utilizing online booking system and answering directional questions.17. Provides library orientations, including virtual and face to face, on topics such as the library catalogue, Discovery Search, journal databases, citations, e-resources, etc.18. Provides departmental support to librarians including promoting library technologies, project planning, LLC activities and events.19. Participates in departmental professional development programming.20. Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.21. Other related duties as assigned by Coordinator Library Services.Required Education & Experience
  • 2 year Library and Information Technician Diploma from a recognized institution;
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant cataloguing and systems library experience (SirsiDynix platform preferred).
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities1. Demonstrated ability to utilize bibliographic tools such as MarcEdit, or equivalent.2. Current knowledge of AACR2/RDA cataloguing rules.3. Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office.4. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of journal databases and e-resources.5. Knowledgeable about current library trends and emerging technologies.6. Clearly evidenced organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan and prioritize tasks, ensure attention to detail and efficiently meet deadlines.7. Good judgment to enable the position holder to work independently, demonstrate initiative and employ analytical thinking to solve problems.8.
