Job Description

Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. SIIT welcomes over 2400 students into our urban and community programs annually as well as serving over 6000 clients through our nine Career Centres across the province. The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies is playing a significant role in Saskatchewan #39;s economic future. You can contribute to that success while building your career.The Indigenous Practical Nursing (IPN) program is a full time two year diploma program. The program will prepare students to become a culturally responsive and professional care provider- with an understanding of western and Indigenous approaches to health and wellness. Classroom, technologically enhanced lab, and practicum activities will help students to develop the skills needed to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations.Nature and ScopeInstructors report directly to their applicable Dean/Program Head and are located across the province of Saskatchewan in various educational settings. The incumbent instructs SIIT students in the classroom, laboratory or shop environments and assists during consultation hours.General AccountabilityAs the educational leader in the classroom, Instructors will be responsible for delivering SIIT programs and curricula with the purpose of promoting student success. Working collaboratively as a team of educational professionals, Instructors will demonstrate a strong commitment to create and maintain a creative and positive learning environment at SIIT. Instructors are required to keep current with developments in their subject area, instructional resources and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities to suit the individual needs of their students. The incumbent will be required to plan, organize and implement instructional activities which create a learning environment that guides and provides the greatest opportunity for student success. These include the following broad areas of accountability:Specific AccountabilitiesInstruction and Administration

  • Prepare lesson plans and appropriate delivery methods planning documents for course delivery
  • Select, design, update and create course related materials including student assessment records, and attendance records
  • Maintain program equipment, laboratory facilities and materials to ensure a safe and organized work environment where applicable
  • Incorporate current technology advancements within instruction and administration where applicable
  • Use appropriate methods of instruction, modeling, and mentoring to facilitate student learning
  • Use appropriate methods of evaluating and recording student progress within set time frames
  • Make recommendations to modify course objectives, course outlines, curriculum and evaluation procedures and such instruments
  • Seek professional development opportunities to keep current and relevant in applicable teaching areas, educational standards, industry trends, and best practices
  • Ensure that instruction design and delivery supports the approved objectives of the program
  • Contribute to SIIT #39;s strategic effectiveness by representing and participating on internal and external committees as required
  • Maintain control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program
Student Success
  • Guide and retain students with respect to academic progress and subject matters and assist them in obtaining appropriate counseling for personal and non-academic concerns
  • Make recommendations as necessary to Learning Services and/or Program Head to assist them in obtaining personal support for academic/non-academic concerns
  • Create and maintain a creative and positive learning environment that provides the opportunity for meaningful learning
  • In collaboration with the Program Head, organize, supervise and/or monitor practicums
  • Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times, students are knowledgeable of safety techniques, and all equipment is maintained in a safe working condition
  • Monitor student outcomes with other nursing faculty and employers and adjust course content to facilitate student success
Relationship Managementamp; Leadership
  • Adhere to and promote academic regulations and SIIT policies and procedures
  • Support the enhancement of future student enrollment through positive promotion of SIIT programs
  • Attend and positively contribute during staff, department, and institute meetings
  • Foster a positive, collaborative and professional working relationship among students, coworkers and partners across the institution
  • Develops and maintains respectful relations through the use of problem solving and constructive resolution of student issues
  • Maintain classroom, shop and/or laboratory discipline and, if necessary, recommend action to applicable supervisor regarding student behavior, including formal student disciplinary action
  • Ensures a positive, diverse and inclusive work and learning environment
Required Qualifications and Experience: Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or RN with a Master #39;s degree in progress and is a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS). Relevant clinical training, practice experience, and ongoing professional development is required. Knowledge of the role and scope of practice of the Licensed Practical Nurse is required. Minimum 1 year of full-time clinical practice experience in medical-surgical, pediatrics/labor and delivery, and/or long term care/residential settings. An understanding of adult learning theories and principles is considered an asset. For success in this position a genuine commitment to help students learn and succeed is required. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT #39;s Alcohol and Substances policy.
