More information can be found here.Are you a biologist with a passion for forest ecosystems and management Do you enjoy working in a dynamic environmentThe Ministry of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship (LWRS) is accountable for integrated water, land and natural resource management and cross-sector legislation, policy and objective setting for land and marine environments. Building on integrated land and resource management efforts in the past, the Ministry will seek to build a new vision in collaboration with natural resource ministries and First Nations that will embrace shared decision making on the land base. The Ministry will strengthen integration across the sector to mitigate, plan, respond and adapt our management practices, including a focus on effectively managing cumulative effects.The role and work of the Ecosystems Section in the Kootenay-Boundary Region of the Ministry of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship is to conserve and manage native species and ecosystems. The work of the Ecosystems Section involves a broad range of subject areas and functions including the collection and management of information on species habitat and ecosystems; species at risk; habitat conservation, management and restoration; and development and implementation of standards and guidelines related to these areas.The Forest Ecosystems Biologist is the Section’s professional and technical expert on forest biodiversity and ecosystem health.   • Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences, plus 4 years related experience*; OR
  • Master of Science or higher in biological sciences, plus 2 years of related experience*.
  • Recent (within the last 5 years) experience related to the management of habitat and/or species within forest ecosystems.
  • Registered (or immediately eligible** for registration) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC with the College of Applied Biology.
    • **Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment. Confirmation of registration/ eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. If you are not currently registered, advise how you have confirmed with the CAB that you are immediately eligible
Related Experience* (a combination of two or more):
  • Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policies in order to make recommendations.
  • Experience in providing science and technical advice to managers mediating solutions and making decisions in natural resource management within and/or outside government.
  • Experience in planning and conducting terrestrial or forest ecosystem monitoring/assessments, analysis and reporting;
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders (e.g. environmental regulatory agencies, government and non-government agencies, public and private resource development agencies).
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Recent (within 5 years) and direct experience applying BC’s natural resource regulations and/or legislation.
  • Recent (within 5 years) and direct experience applying stewardship approaches and initiatives specific to habitat management in forest ecosystems (eg habitat protection, restoration).
  • Recent experience (within 5 years) developing and promoting working relationships and collaboration with First Nations.
  • Knowledge of habitat protection measures under BC’s Forest and Range Practices Act.
  • Knowledge of operational forest management in the forest industry.
Willingness statements:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 drivers licence or equivalent.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
  • Willingness to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments. This may including travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in camp conditions and operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Willingness to meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
