Job Description

Operations ManagerPosition SummaryTop Hand Supplies is a raw pet food/pet treat manufacturer and distributor based in beautiful Cranbrook, BC. Cranbrook is nestled in the mountains of south east BC and is surrounded by breath taking mountains, crystal clear lakes, and pristine rivers, the kootenays are an outdoor enthusiasts paradise and a great place to call home. The Operations Manager is actively involved in high-level management of the day-to-day operations. This key role plays a major part in planning, scheduling, coordinating, and implementing all aspects of the operations and processes. The operations manager provides hands-on and inspirational leadership and motivation through clear communication, strong organization, respect, effective delegation, training, time/priority management, & critical thinking. This manager sets an example for all subordinates in the company and will always work toward excellence and continuous improvement in all aspects under their control.Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with other management and ownership to establish, set, communicate, and maintain the business strategy, mission, & vision in alignment with company values and market needs.
  • Monitor business structure and work with management to continually evolve it to fit the needs of the current company and into the future.
  • Play an active role in developing new positions as needed.
  • Play an active role in recruiting & retaining all staff.
  • Lead and motivate subordinates to advance employee engagement and build and develop high-performing operations and managerial teams.
  • Oversee all operations and business activities to ensure they produce the desired results and are consistent with the overall strategy and mission.
  • Work with management to make objective, informed, & metric/data-driven decisions to advance the business.
  • Effectively and clearly delegate tasks and projects to subordinates.
  • Enforce adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the company’s legality and business ethics.
  • Review financial, operational, sales, & marketing reports/metrics to monitor company health and devise solutions or improvements continually.
  • Build trusting relations with key partners and stakeholders and act as a point of contact for important business partners.
  • Analyze problematic situations and occurrences and work with stakeholders to provide solutions to ensure company and partner survival and growth.
  • Maintain current and forecasted knowledge of the markets and industries the company is involved in.
  • Ensure employees understand why certain decisions are made and how new processes and procedures will impact their day-to-day duties and responsibilities.
  • The Operations Manager is responsible for maintaining morale and company culture with their guidance.
  • Take an active role in operational supervision, training, scheduling, performance management, recruiting, retention, & end of employment.
  • Effectively communicate with all personnel be it company, vendors, or customers to ensure everyone involved is clear on objectives and expectations for the individual, group, or company.
  • Treat all people with respect and show professionalism at all times.
  • Perform tracking, costing, budgeting, forecasting, and maintaining relevant KPIs to ensure the departments are both profitable and driving the company forward to reach its goals and objectives.
  • Manage, maintain, and improve the company operations through effective communication, delegation, planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure the departments are effectively tracking and maintaining an adequate throughput of in-demand goods at an acceptable level of efficiency through metric-driven tracking programs, standardization, & documentation.
  • Actively bring forward ideas for continuous improvement from all members of the departments and work through the feasibility of these ideas as they may benefit the company.
  • Implement continuous improvement projects and track metrics associated with the projects for success.
  • Build, train, and grow dedicated, engaged, & reliable teams that contribute to the company goals and objectives.
  • Be a courageous leader in workplace health & safety
  • Build upon and enforce department/company procedures and policies for all aspects of the operation.
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement and engagement within the organization as a whole with a focus on standardization, employee engagement, and operational excellence.
  • Plan, schedule, participate and play an active role in regular department meetings for H&S and operations.
  • Participate in and play an active role in regular management meetings, creating relevant reports and presentations on the performance of the department.
  • Maintaining and submitting all required documentation and reporting in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the departments maintain regulatory requirements for all governing bodies at all times as required.
  • Hold all subordinate team members accountable for failure to meet reasonable expectations and work with team members and management to be proactive in solving problems.
  • Constantly analyze patterns and industry trends and implement improvement strategies in a way that supports the company.
  • Perform other duties and assist with other departments as required.
  • Perform exit interviews of all subordinate resignations, track and report on causes of department churn. Develop and implement changes to reduce churn within the department.
  • Celebrate individual, department, and company successes, analyze and create solutions for any shortfalls or failures.
Working Conditions
  • Mostly indoors, office type environment but does include time within operations, suppliers, & customers.
  • Extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Can be a very high-pressure environment with demands from multiple parties.
  • Some travel may be required within the scope of this role.
Qualifications & Skills
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Operations Management, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience in Operations Management in food manufacturing or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in automation systems implementation an asset
  • Experience managing and building teams is required
  • Strategic thinking and excellent interpersonal communication skills are crucial for this role
  • Strong & organized analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Extensive knowledge of the pet food/food/meat manufacturing industry including but not limited to, equipment selection, equipment operation, R&M, efficient line operation, sanitation, automation, & safety.
  • Extensive knowledge of supply chain management with a focus on perishable materials and cold chains.
  • Computer competency in general business systems & inventory control.
  • Extensive knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations and other regulatory requirements as applicable for their department.
  • Knowledge and training in 5S, Lean, and/or TOC.
  • Ability to give and take unbiased positive and constructive feedback to/from people
  • Decisive and time-bound decision making
  • Effectively communicate using concise, easy-to-understand language.
  • Have the ability to recognize the potential and limitations of team members and work within those parameters to develop the best team possible.
  • Ability to recognize when a change in the team is required, be it 1 for 1 staff change or move, reduction in staff/role, or addition of staff/role.
Salary & Benefits
  • $75,000 - $100,000 per year salary depending on experience
  • Extended health care available after 90 days
  • RRSP matching program available after one-year employment
