Student support workers are based in schools and work with the school staff and the home to support students school success.By supporting the efforts of the classroom teachers and the principal and facilitating the communications between the school and the home, the Student Support Worker Program strives to improve well-being and academic success for each and every African Nova Scotian student.Most importantly, student support workers who are of African descent serve as cultural role models.Minimum RequirementsCompletion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate in Human Services, Social Services or a related field.Two to three years experience working with the African Nova Scotian community, with particular emphasis on African Nova Scotian youthAdditional AssetsKnowledge of African Nova Scotian community;Knowledge of issues facing African Nova Scotian within the context of educationKnowledge of how race, class and gender and other forms of discrimination impact African Nova Scotian youth;Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively as part of a team involving students, school administration, teachers, parents/guardians, support agencies and surrounding communities;Ability to work and to follow through with assigned tasks independently;Strong interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills;Willingness to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the community served by the schools and to attend related community meetings;Knowledge of, experience in, and a commitment to the principles of race relations, cross-cultural understanding and human rights;Knowledge and experience in mediation and conflict resolution;Ability and desire to engage in continuing education and skills development;A valid Nova Scotias drivers license and or access to a properly insured vehicle is required to service the multiple school sites.Preference will be given to candidates from the African Nova Scotian community.Closing Notes: This position is represented by the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees UnionQuick Apply
