In this role, you will be responsible for navigating the vessel during the collection of hydrographic survey data.Hydrographers use multibeam echo-sounders to calculate the distance to the sea floor. These tools measure depths by bouncing sound waves off the seabed and measuring the length of time that it takes for the echo to return.Surveys done this way follow pre-planned lines along which the surveying vessel steers. How closely the lines are spaced depends on the complexity of the seabed. In hazardous waters, complete coverage of the bottom is required. As coxswain, you will work closely with the on-board hydrographer and/or the Hydrographer-In-Charge in order to safely launch, recover, and secure the survey vessel at various ports/marinas; perform pre-departure checks of all mechanical and safety equipment; record deficiencies as well as keep daily logs of vessel usage; safely navigate the vessel during survey operations utilizing various means including but not limited to electronic charts, radar, and on-board hydrographic acquisition software.Intent of the processWhen you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for an immediate vacancy.
