This competition may be used to appoint successful candidate(s) to future regular, term or acting status positions subject to staffing approval.This competition will be used to fill four vacant Mines & Quarry Inspector positions for the Department of Natural Resources and Northern Development (NRND). Mining, Oil and Gas is a team of engineers, geologist(s), auditor(s), technicians, inspectors and administrative staff that ensure compliance with the Mines and Minerals Act and associated regulations.Note: These positions will be located out of Winnipeg and Dauphin, Manitoba.One of the four positions is a designated Bilingual position located in Winnipeg.Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Manitoba Drivers Licence.
  • Able to travel by air, water, off road vehicles and foot to remote locations in harsh conditions.
  • Must be able to be on-call and work outside of the regular working hours.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and French (for Bilingual position only).
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the required position duties including: sitting and standing for prolonged periods; prolonged walking outdoors and prolonged exposure to the elements; working in an active construction environment, which may require walking over uneven surfaces; physically capable of loading and unloading field equipment such as off-road vehicles and boats.
Qualifications:Essential:
  • Post-secondary education in natural resource management or other science disciplines (i.e. Engineering or Geology). An equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage potentially high conflict situations effectively.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in the upstream mining and quarry or construction industry, including the monitoring of mining, quarrying and mineral tenure acquisition activities, application of engineering, geological, environmental and safety standards and practices as it relates to the exploration, development, operation and production from mines and quarries.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency with word processing software, email programs, spreadsheet applications and databases.
  • The ability to prioritize, plan and execute assigned duties in a systematic and efficient manner under limited supervision.
  • Excellent French verbal communication skills (for Bilingual position only).
  • Excellent French written communication skills (for Bilingual position only).
  • Experience with GPS and GIS applications.
Duties:The unit provides monitoring and enforcement of requirements under the Mines and Minerals Act (the Act) and regulation(s). The Mines and Quarry Inspector (MI3) is responsible for the delivery of regulatory compliance and enforcement programs relating to the aggregate, non-aggregate quarry and mining industry.
