Regional Connections Immigrant ServicesPosition: Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS Worker) / Settlement Assistant - DauphinReports to: SWIS Coordinator, Settlement CoordinatorDate posted: October 17, 2022Date of closure: October 31, 2022Regional Connections is looking to fill a FT (30 - 37.5 hrs./week, depending on candidate) SWIS Worker/Settlement Assistant positions in our Dauphin office. Wage range $18-22/hr. Optional health benefits available.Program Summary: The main objective of the SWIS program is to assist newcomer children, youth and their families to integrate into their school and community by providing information, settlement services and referral to community supports.Position Summary: The SWIS worker will collaborate with and work out of schools in the Mountain View School Division. The SWIS worker, under the direction of the SWIS Coordinator, provides information and referrals through intake assessment and providing individual and group support to newcomer children, youth and families accessing the Kindergarten to Grade 12 school system to ensure their integration in the school and community. The SWIS worker bridges the gap between the newcomers, school and the community.Under the direction of the Settlement Coordinator, the Settlement Assistant component of the position will consist of assisting to plan and prepare settlement workshops and information sessions, developing promotional materials, advertising events and performing data entry, as assigned.Duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducts needs assessments to identify immediate and long-term settlement needs
  • Participates in the school reception and orientation process
  • Meets regularly with school stakeholders to strengthen partnership
  • Conducts information and orientation sessions for newcomers about settlement related issues and life in Canada
  • Facilitates access to school activities, committees, councils and associations
  • Facilitates and/or assists in workshops to increase newcomers’ understanding of the educational system and parenting issues in a Canadian context
  • Provides orientation sessions and/or referrals to programs and services available in the school and the community
  • Plans and carries out activities to build connections between newcomer students and between newcomer and non-newcomer students
  • Participates actively in all mandated training, staff meetings and workshops
  • Maintains appropriate database records and files pertaining to settlement services provided to clients
  • Assists in planning and preparation of settlement workshops and information sessions
  • Develops and edits promotional material as assigned (e.g. posters and social media posts)
  • Updates social media sites
  • Data entry as assigned
  • Other tasks as assigned by the SWIS Coordinator and Settlement Coordinator
Qualifications:
  • Proven interpersonal skills and experience connecting with children, youth and adults
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of local school division, provincial education system, and community resources
  • Ability to network, liaise, and collaborate in a team approach to service delivery
  • Ability to deliver group presentations, workshops, and other group activities
  • Good organizational skills for scheduling, task management, note taking, data entry
  • Driver’s license and access to car/transportation since the position is mobile
  • Demonstrated computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
  • Post-secondary certificate or degree in early childhood education, elementary education, family or adult education, social work, or any other related field an asset.
  • Bi/multi-lingual ability and awareness of newcomer settlement experience are assets
