Job Description

The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. If you are self-motivated, looking to take on a new challenge where you can make a difference, enjoy both responsibility and accountability, and are ready to join one of British Columbia #39;s most inclusive and environmentally conscious municipalities, we look forward to receiving your application!We are looking for an experienced Truck Driver/Loader Operator to perform a broad range of duties in a safe and efficient manner. The successful candidate will operate our municipal trucks, including loading and hauling various materials, towing a commercial trailer, spreading gravel and asphalt, and operating tanker/distributor or sweeper trucks. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time. Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:

  1. Completion of Grade 12.
  2. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 1 B.C. Driver #39;s License with air endorsement; a satisfactory current driver #39;s abstract will be required.
  3. One (1) year experience operating commercial trucks at a Class 3 with air endorsement level or higher.
  4. Ability to operate tandem and single axle trucks equipped with sanders and plows under adverse weather conditions; shifts and weekends will be required.
  5. Ability to follow legal pre- and post-trip inspections, maintain written records, and follow prescribed routes.
  6. Ability to efficiently operate both truck and commercial trailer combinations of over 38,000 KG GVW.
  7. Ability to spread gravel and asphalt.
  8. Ability to operate loaders; and
  9. The position may be physically demanding and the candidate must be capable of driving for long periods of time and be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website.Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a police information check.
