Company descriptionEntering its fourth year, Jones Family Greens is a small-scale, regenerative farming operation. The first three years of our operation, growing has taken place on land at other organic farms; 2021 makes the first year growing at our new home. Produce is grown in an ecological and sustainable manner to produce the most nutritious and flavourful food possible. Jones Family Greens prides itself in its varied mixed greens as well as an assortment of seasonal produce. Jones Family Greens has been a vendor at the Waterdown Farmers’ Market since 2018 and the Rockwood Farmers’ Market since 2019. The impetus for starting Jones Family Greens was for Matt Jones to actively address two increasing crises of our time: decreasing health and climate change; focussing on soil health can be an important part of the solution to both by sequestering carbon and growing more flavourful and more nutritious food. Jones Family Greens is increasingly focused on moving beyond sustainable to regenerative farming practices by increasingly adopting no-till methods and focussing on soil health.Job descriptionJoin Jones Family Greens in growing diverse greens and produce at a vibrant small farm in Eden Mills, Ontario. Work responsibilities will, under the guidance and support of the farm owner/operator and the team lead, potentially include seeding and caring for trays in the greenhouse; assist in building greenhouse; direct seeding and transplanting crops; data collection for ongoing research trials; weed management; harvesting, washing, packing of crops; developing client skills by assisting at Farmers’ Markets, and other related tasks as required. Must be comfortable doing physical work as a member of a small team or alone; working flexible schedule; learning, following, and helping to improve proper procedures, and keeping required records in the various weather conditions we experience in the summer. For the previous three years, Jones Family Greens has operated on leased land. We have recently acquired a former children’s summer camp to function as the permanent new home. This means 2021 will be an exciting time to gain experience in establishing the infrastructure needed on organic farms, preparing for organic certification and more. Each employee will develop project management, leadership, digital and communications skills by leading an individual project of interest that improves efficiency and operations at the farm (examples include implementing computer-based record keeping practices for organic certification, developing a spreadsheet system for crop planning, and more). All projects will be carried out with the direct support and guidance of the farm owner/operator and team lead with access to manuals, publications, and online resources and with assistance of other team members as needed. Positions are funded for 7 weeks with possibility of extension.Contract length: 7 weeksApplication Deadline: 2021-06-11Expected Start Date: 2021-06-28Job Types: Full-time, TemporarySalary: $15.00 per hourBenefits:
