Job Description

PART-TIME POSITION AVAILABLE FORAssociate ArtistPOSITIONWe are seeking a highly collaborative individual who is interested in learning about and participating in artistic leadership at a large regional theatre as an Artistic Associate. Our ideal candidate is a working theatre artist who lives in the Edmonton area and identifies as a member of an underrepresented community. The Associate Artist is part of the Citadel’s Artistic Leadership Team, reports to the Associate Artistic Director, and collaborates with the Artistic Director, Producer, Company Manager, Associate Producer and Director of Education & Outreach.ORGANIZATIONFounded in 1965, Citadel Theatre is the largest non-profit professional theatre organization in Edmonton, Alberta, and one of the largest regional theatres in Canada. In a usual season we will produce up to 11 productions, with a wide range of styles and genres). We have around 7,000 subscribers and 50,000 single ticket purchases annually. We run several theatre programs for all ages, develop new plays and musicals, and operate a rental business (for venues, meeting space, costumes & props). We maintain and operate a one square city block facility in Edmonton’s Downtown Arts District which includes five unique venues, world-class production facilities, a theatre school, classrooms, multipurpose rooms, and the Lee Pavilion. With more than 300 events under our roof each year, the Citadel contributes to the economic vitality of Downtown Edmonton, helps attract both tourists and skilled workers, and increases the quality of life for Edmontonians and Albertans.TERMThis 2-year contract will take place between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2024. A part-time casual position, it offers an hourly rate of $30.00 to a total of $10,000 per year (approximately 330 hours annually, or 6-7 hours per week). The hours of work can be distributed over the year as agreed to by the Associate Artist and the Citadel’s Artistic Leadership Team (some weeks will be busier than others).RESPONSIBILITIESThe Associate Artist is responsible for creating, leading and collaborating on outreach, education, new play and programming initiatives. The priority is providing a platform for equity deserving voices, as well as training opportunities for emerging artists.With tasks distributed throughout the season, this hands-on opportunity will be aligned with the selected candidate’s own strengths, skills and interests, allowing for a unique and varied experience. This will include:

  • Leading the Citadel’s RBC Emerging Artist Program
  • Participating in selection committees for initiatives such as the Citadel’s Mainstage Assistant Director Program and Playwrights Lab;
  • Reading scripts and attending performances and reporting on their potential/suitability for the Citadel;
  • Participating in curating online content for the Citadel’s social media platforms (sharing work by underrepresented voices, sharing anti-racism resources);
  • Collaborating with other departments within the Citadel, such as New Play Development, Fund Development, Marketing, Education & Outreach and Guest Services.
  • Building connections between the Citadel, our community, and local artists and organizations;
  • Collaborating on training and outreach opportunities;
  • Supporting and reviewing grant applications;
  • Participating in season planning;
  • Participating in auditions as panel member;
  • Acting as a representative of Citadel Theatre’s Artistic Leadership Team at public events.
The Associate Artist will also help review the practices and policies of the Citadel, working with the organization to make changes to ensure the Citadel is open, welcoming and safe for all, and operating with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the heart of the organization. These activities include:
  • Participating in the Citadel’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (meets monthly);
  • Consulting on artist engagement practices (audition/rehearsal/backstage safety);
  • Consulting on board and staff recruitment practices;
  • Recommending resources/experts to lead systemic/structural change at the Citadel.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCEThe Associate Artist is a working theatre artist that lives in the Edmonton, Alberta area who is interested in learning about and participating in artistic leadership at a large regional theatre, and excited by the prospect of being a collaborative member of our Artistic Leadership Team. The ideal candidate will have the following:
  • strong interpersonal, oral/written communication, analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • ability to work independently, is self-motivated and able to prioritize work effectively;
  • very familiar with local and national theatre communities;
  • familiar with sector organizations, such as Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, Associated Designers of Canada, Playwrights Guild of Canada;
  • familiar with basic theatre producing processes (budgeting, timelines);
  • comfortable working with (or learning) different computer programs such as Microsoft (Outlook, Word, Excel), Zoom, Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox, Google Workplace, and Asana.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This role performs most duties remotely, with some meetings/events occurring in person.
  • Candidate should have access to a personal computer, internet connection and phone.
  • The candidate will be expected to be available for meetings and events that occur during regular office hours (9am to 5pm), as well as some evenings and weekends.
  • Scheduling will be mutually agreed upon and flexible, allowing the candidate to maintain a professional artistic practice outside of this Citadel role.
