The people who live here are our greatest ambassadors, so making it easier for them to love our city makes it easier for us to sell it.About Community Initiatives & AgricultureThe Community Initiatives and Agriculture (CIA) team is the arm of Explore Edmonton Corporation that stewards legacy events like K-Days and Farmfair International. We are also a team of urban agriculture experts and enthusiasts that continue to make an impact with projects and programs geared to agriculture education, community partnerships, and sustainability.There is no better example of our work in the community to connect people to food and farming within the city limits than at the Explore Edmonton Urban Farm, and no better way to show our commitment to the quality of life of Edmontonians than through the events that our team of Community Volunteers support not just for Explore Edmonton, but for our attraction’s partners all around Edmonton, every year.And, for good measure, we always throw in a healthy dose of entertainment like the new Edmonton Pro Rodeo, the last stop on the road to the Canadian Finals Rodeo.About the PositionWorking in close collaboration with the Director of Social and Environmental Sustainability, and in consultation with other Explore Edmonton divisions and partners, the Event Sustainability Coordinator, CIA assists in the development and delivery of Explore Edmonton’s event sustainability programs, products and services including social and environmental sustainability initiatives at K-days, Farmfair International and Canada Pro Rodeo. This position is temporary (12 months) with the possibility of extension.The Sustainability Coordinator aids in the development of an engaging sustainability programming strategy that lends to event growth and innovation, year after year. They build and maintain relationships with community organizations, tourism stakeholders, businesses, and innovators to ensure a strong sustainable tourism ecosystem is established that supports our events and, wherever possible, create positive impact for the community we serve.The successful candidate will ensure reliable event data is collected and maintained in alignment with sustainability benchmarks and appropriate measures, standards, and methodologies. They help produce post-event reporting and improvement plans that underscore Explore Edmonton’s commitment to continuous, sustainable progress. The Sustainability Coordinator Models Explore Edmonton core values & positively contributes to organizational culture.The Event Sustainability Coordinator performs tasks with an understanding of the importance of sustainable event operations. The work to ensures clients and visitors have an engaging and memorable experience at every touchpoint.The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Consultations with event partners (show management, exhibitors, suppliers, etc.) to develop and promote sustainability initiatives.
  • Delivery of sustainability products and services, including overseeing the event environmental services booth, transportation plans, event waste reduction and recycling plans and others.
  • Collecting feedback on customer experiences. Continuous improvement of sustainability products and services including the development of new/ improved offerings.
  • In collaboration with the CIA events team, help to develop and enhance innovative event sustainability programming track(s) that adds value to the attendee experience and highlights sustainable innovations.
  • Data collection and entry for event sustainability benchmarks and standards such as ISO, the United Nations SDGs and other methodologies, according to established deadlines.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement for event sustainability benchmarks and standards. Assist in the creation of improvement plans and the implementation of actions identified in them.
  • Liaise with marketing and sales teams to develop client-facing resources and identify opportunities to create more awareness of Explore Edmonton’s events.
  • Relationship building with community organizations, businesses, innovators, and other existing or potential event partners.
  • Identify training requirements for event partners and participants. Develop and deliver on event sustainability training for exhibitors, employees, volunteers, contractors, etc.
The Successful candidate will have:
  • Post-Secondary bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
  • Post-secondary education in the field of tourism, environmental or social sustainability or corporate social responsibility is an asset but not a requirement.
  • Minimum 3 years related experience.
  • Ability to be self-sufficient and will excel in an environment where tasks are completed collaboratively as a team.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to collect and analyze information, problem-solve, and make decisions.
  • Ability to stand/ walk for prolonged periods during events.
  • Ability to have flexible working hours or overtime during event periods.
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven skill in delivering excellent customer service.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge and experience in sustainable events are an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in agricultural sustainability is an asset.
  • Experience instructing, motivating and/or training others.
  • Proven ability to establish goals and set clear expectations, organize, and prioritize activities, and follow through with timely execution in a cross functional team environment.
