Job Description

This role is in-person.Department summaryThe Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) Core Research Facilities provide fee-based access to instrumentation, technology and/or services. These facilities allow our researchers access to essential scientific infrastructure at a reasonable cost. Benefits of using core facilities also include expert consultation, technical assistance, training and education from dedicated staff, enhancement of scientific collaboration, and promotion of higher-level experimentation.The FoMD Cell Imaging Core is a multi-user facility providing resource access and services to over 100 users annually across the University of Alberta. The Facility provides services and training for light and electron microscopy and offers a wide range of cutting-edge imaging acquisition equipment and expert consultation for experimental design related to microscopy experiments.Position summaryReporting to the Manager, Core Research Facilities, this position is responsible for contributing both to research and knowledge transfer within the FoMD and the University of Alberta by overseeing the operation of the FoMD Cell Imaging Core. Specifically, the position supports research by instructing and assisting users in all aspects of light and electron microscopy, including sample preparation, image acquisition, and data analysis. The position is also responsible for equipment and facility maintenance, the preparation of files required for facility billing, and is the first point of contact for the Core in online research facilities directories. The position also contributes to researcher training in collaboration with other FoMD Cell Imaging Core personnel, through the development and presentation of lectures, practical sessions and workshops.DutiesOperational, Executive and Educational Functions

  • Provides technical and troubleshooting services to users of facility, including advice on experimental design and the interpretation/analysis of data
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of microscopy technologies, including consulting on development of theoretical and technical training to optimize use of existing instruments
  • Coordinates with IST for data storage, archiving, transfer, and security standards
  • Acts as a ‘knowledge consultant’ for researchers and FoMD Office of Research to advise on new equipment purchases and on grant applications
  • Consults with researchers during development of grant proposals and provides letters outlining technical support for those proposals.
  • Participates in the development and presentation of lectures, practical sessions and workshops related to imaging
  • Facilitates training and product information seminars with technical representatives from companies
  • Ongoing professional development via participation external microscopy vendor demonstrations, teaching and practical imaging workshops, and microscopy focused scientific meetings
  • First point of contact for the CFI Navigator and the CoreMarketplace, online research facilities directories
  • Is a voting member of the FoMD Cell Imaging Core User Committee
  • Liaise with U of A Health, Safety and Environment office on an ongoing basis to ensure facility hazard management and certifications (e.g. lasers) are up do date
Site Facility Management and Operation
  • Supervises two technologist staff positions in the Cell Imaging Core.
  • Helps coordinate equipment bookings (using Stratocore PPMS management software) and confirm all equipment usage details
  • Participate with other core facility staff in the development of operational procedures for the facility including training programs for facility personnel
  • Monitors operational status of current equipment and performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs as required
  • Performs software upgrades on image acquisition and analysis computers
  • Manages issues related to biohazards, ensures trainees and users are aware of safety issues, monitors compliance, and is responsible for maintaining the facility’s registration in the ARISE database
  • Prepares billing files for all facility billing
  • Conducts tours of and promotes facility
  • Performs general lab maintenance including reagent inventory and cleaning
  • Facilitate partnerships with users outside the university to support the imaging core
Training of facility users
  • Training of new users in the theoretical and practical aspects of light and electron microscopy, including both basic and advanced imaging techniques
  • Provides on-site consultation for users of facility, including advice on experimental design and the interpretation/analysis of data
  • Ensure all facility users have appropriate safety training as required by U of A Health, Safety and Environment office
Qualifications
  • PhD in cell biology or similar field
  • Minimum five years of laboratory experience
  • Excellent working knowledge of imaging techniques including laser scanning confocal, TIRFM, spinning disc confocal, live-cell imaging, whole slide scanning, laser dissection/laser pressure capture microscopy, super resolution microscopy, histological imaging, and analysis of imaging data
  • Expert knowledge in image acquisition software(s), both commercial and open-source required
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation of samples for transmission electron microscopy including fixation and embedding
  • Demonstrated experience in the acquisition of images from biological specimens using TEM, SEM, or both
  • Knowledge in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and coding preferred
  • Knowledge in computer hardware, operating systems, software, administration in network environments preferred
  • Experience in facility management preferred
  • Ability to multitask and successfully meet deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
