Job Description

Boyle McCauley Health Centre’s Pathways to Housing Program in Edmonton ends homelessness for people who suffer from serious, persistent mental illness (such as schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder), usually co-occurring with addictions and medical and social problems, by:

  • providing access to permanent independent housing without requiring treatment or sobriety as a precondition for housing; and
  • providing outreach community support and treatment with a philosophy that is founded in the principles of consumer choice and harm reduction, using both evidence-based Best Practices and innovative approaches.
The Client and Housing Support Specialist reports to the Team Leader and is a participating member of the inter-disciplinary Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team providing comprehensive wrap-around treatment, support and rehabilitation/recovery services for the clients of the program. Using a team case management model, all team members are required to remain current with all clients, their situation, recovery program and goals. All treatment/recovery plans are developed as a team, with clients directing their care.As a Member of the ACT Team, our Client and Housing Support Specialist responsibilities include:
  • Assisting Clients to move into their homes including looking for vacancies, attending viewings, lease signings, setting up of the home, and orienting Clients to their apartments and neighbourhoods.
  • Arranging for, and doing directly, tasks to assist clients in maintaining their homes or to move, such as cleaning, repairs, preparation for pest treatment, inspections etc.
  • Maintaining our inventory of household items for Clients
  • Liaising with stakeholders as needed to secure housing and needed items for Clients, and to maintain good relationships with landlord and others
  • Coaching Clients to maintain positive tenancies
  • Assisting with activities of daily living such as taking Clients grocery shopping, laundry, teaching Clients how to prepare meals and keep their home, transporting and accompanying Clients to medical or other appointments, or assisting Clients to engage in the community
  • Performs other duties as assigned to assist in the Program’s capacity to provide services, which may include such things as office administrative tasks, answering phones, providing transportation to clients, attending home visits with Clients, etc.
  • Participates in housing-related, Team and BMHC trainings and meetings, and enters and maintains electronic records as required.
Please note that the work is community-based, so most Client interactions take place in Client’s homes or elsewhere in the Community. Staff must be comfortable working independently, and with driving throughout Edmonton.This is a permanent, full-time position with hours of work of 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday thru Friday, with some flexibility required around actual hours worked. Salary range is $20.95 -$26.74 per hour ($40,855-$52,143 per year); comprehensive benefits package.Qualification Requirements
  • A 2-year diploma in a field related to social services, health, mental health and/or addictions. A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience in housing work, including knowledge of landlords, housing options and related vendors in Edmonton
  • Experience in a fast-paced work environment with responsibility to organize, coordinate and perform many different tasks with accuracy and efficiency, and flexibility to rapidly meet changing needs of a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience and/or knowledge of best practices in one of more of following areas would be an asset:
    • working in addictions, concurrent disorders and/or Housing First;
    • mental health services in a community treatment setting;
    • providing outreach services in a ‘street/inner city/chronic homelessness’ environment or equivalent.
    • Harm Reduction philosophy; and/or
    • working from a culturally appropriate, trauma informed and client-centred perspective, including how best to support Indigenous Clients.
  • Successful experience in inter-disciplinary teamwork.
  • Communication skills/literacy: written, oral, computer
  • Valid driver’s license (non-GDL) and use of personal car is a must (Mileage will be reimbursed)
  • Physical capacity to perform the duties of the position including activities such as stairs, lifting, light moving of furniture, cleaning, etc.
