Job Description

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services—food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.The Mustard Seed Community Navigator offers supports and programming, on site, for people residing at Britannia Crossing. The Community Navigator will connect and build relationships with Residents with the focus of providing supports geared towards tenancy-retention, wellness, safety, community, stability, and growth.The Community Navigator, reporting to the Housing Support Supervisor, collaborates with other Mustard Seed programs, Residents of Britannia Crossing, and MINT Communities, and is responsible for developing and facilitating resources and programs to support clients.Position Type: EmployeeReporting to: Housing and Property ManagerLocation: EdmontonDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Establish an on-site presence with routine office hours and a program schedule at Britannia CrossingEngage and meet with clients residing in the Britannia Crossing apartment units on an on-going basisProvide ongoing client-centered support focused on daily living skills, advocacy, and tenancy-retentionEncourage clients to understand their rights and responsibilities as tenants and members of the communityAdvocate to assist clients with accessing resources and supportsProvide crisis intervention, as necessary

  • Document client interactions, service plans and client progress
  • Develop and facilitate in-house programs and offer support resources
  • Liaise with internal and external resources that will help clients increase their assets
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships within The Mustard Seed and with external agencies
  • Attend weekly team meetings and other training as required
Other duties as assignedADMINISTRATIONBuild and share a comprehensive library and knowledge base on community resources;
  • Document client interactions, goals, referrals, and progress
  • Document and report on program statistics, successes and learning opportunities
  • Serve on internal and external committees, as requested
Keep client records and information confidential, updated and secureParticipate in all staff training (e.g. FOIP, First Aid, SafeTALK, Nonviolence Crisis Intervention)MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLSDegree/Diploma in Human Services field and two years of related work experience, or equivalentExperience with case management is considered a strong asset,Minimum one-year work experience working with those experiencing homelessness; direct experience with Housing First initiatives considered a strong assetKnowledge of Edmonton’s community resourcesPreference given to those with experience working with mental health and/or addictionsDemonstrated competency and ability to practice crisis interventionAbility to de-escalate and problem solve with individuals under the influence and/or struggling with a mental health crisisAbility to establish and maintain rapport with culturally diverse clients, including a familiarity with the Indigenous cultureExcellent written, oral and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with clients, members of a team, and community agenciesExcellent organizational and time management skillsA self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional teamAbility to accomplish goals with minimal supervisionProficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Programs); experience with Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) an asset; Knowledge of FOIP and ability to observe confidentiality standardsValid Driver’s License (Class 5), 2 million liability insurance and access to a reliable vehicleWORKING CONDITIONSFull-time permanent employment 40 hours per week. Generally, Monday to Friday 0800-1630 hours, however including some weekend, evening and overtime work as requiredRequires ongoing compassionate care, conflict resolution, problem solving and organizational ability
