Job Description

About CASACASA Mental Health is an established non-profit organization delivering holistic, culturally-safe wrap-around mental health services to Albertans and their families. CASA provides mental health service to the missing middle – mental health treatment for diagnosed children and youth, in between prevention and promotion in primary and community care, and acute treatment in hospital.​CASA’s team of mental health professionals are trauma experts committed to delivering service in collaboration with community partners. This includes assessment and treatment for up to 4,000 children, youth and their families each year, from community outreach settings to intensive treatment programs.About the RoleWorking collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary Core team, the Concurrent Counsellor will enhance access to services, ensure seamless transitions, and improve outcomes for children and youth through an integrated model of care. The Concurrent Counsellor provides recovery-oriented, goal-focused mental health and substance/process use assessment and treatment of children and youth with co-occurring concerns. The Concurrent Counsellor also provides psychoeducation and support to children and youth impacted by substance use in their family and consultation to parents, as well as the broader CASA team.The Concurrent Counsellor will:

  • Provide services unique to the appropriate professional discipline (addictions, psychology, social work, nursing, occupational therapy).
  • Provide client-focused, holistic, recovery-based, and culturally-guided, strengths-based, and trauma-informed assessments/treatments.
  • Contribute to the co-development of collaborative care plans and provide a range of services appropriate to the child/youth and their families or caregivers to meet the mental health and substance/process use concerns identified in in partnership with the broader team.
  • Support development of reflective capacity by conjointly creating and monitoring recovery-oriented goals and adapting care plans as needed, whilst prioritizing the inclusion of diverse needs and strengths in the goals.
  • Facilitate psycho-educational, support, and treatment groups for adolescents and parents.
  • Support patient flow by building therapy readiness prior to program admission and participate in discharge planning and transitioning patients back into their community settings.
  • Carry out case management functions including convening case conferences, and liaising with community services and other professionals involved with the youth and family (especially education, social services, justice, and health), ensuring to advocate for social inclusion and address social determinants
  • Contribute to a multi-disciplinary clinical team with assessment, care planning, treatment, case review and consultation.
  • Practice according to the training and code of ethics of their specific discipline.
  • Apply the principles of evidence-based practice to all aspects of their work.
  • Nurture collaborative linkages with community partners.

  • Bachelor’s Degree (that permits registration under the Health Professions Act) with course work in Substance Use Treatment or Concurrent Disorders and/or work experience or post-graduate training.
  • Active registration under the Health Professions Act.
  • Additional designations may be required to perform restricted psychosocial interventions.
  • ​Minimum one-to-two years of Substance Use Counselling experience in community or tertiary setting is preferred.
  • Experience working in collaborative care models and/or with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent assessment, treatment and case management skills.
  • Strong grasp of the principles of evidence-based practice.
  • Respect for other disciplines and an ability to work collaboratively with diverse interest groups.
  • Practical experience in a children’s mental health treatment setting.
