We believe Canada has the resources, expertise, and innovation ecosystem needed to pioneer this critical sector.At Carbon Removal Canada, our mission is to shape policies that enable the rapid and responsible scaling of the carbon removal sector at both federal and provincial levels. Acting as an honest information broker, we facilitate collaboration across the carbon removal ecosystem to help drive meaningful policy change. Over the past year, we have partnered with the Government of Canada to develop programs aimed at purchasing carbon removal credits, funding technological innovation, and integrating carbon removal into Canada’s climate targets—among other key initiatives. Now we want to replicate that impact in Western Canada.The roleAs the Director of Western Canada, you will spearhead Carbon Removal Canada #39;s strategic engagement with the governments of Alberta and British Columbia, as well as key public interest groups.In this role, you will cultivate and maintain critical relationships with government officials, contribute to policy development, and lead outreach efforts with high-profile stakeholders. By leveraging our policy research expertise, you will work to encourage provincial governments and opposition parties to adopt forward-thinking policies that position Canada as a global leader in scaling carbon removal.Your responsibilities will include identifying and acting on opportunities to advance policies and programs aligned with our objectives, while navigating political developments that could hinder progress. A key part of your work will involve building a durable political coalition to ensure that policy gains remain resilient in the face of political changes. You will represent Carbon Removal Canada in government and stakeholder engagements. You will collaborate with the Carbon Removal Canada team, draw on the support of the Director of Government Relations, and report directly to the Executive Director.What you’ll doBelow is a list of key responsibilities currently envisioned for this role. We are a fast-paced organization with evolving priorities, so these responsibilities may change. Over time, we expect the Director to set their own priorities and provide input on other overarching strategies.Government affairs:

• Develop Carbon Removal Canada #39;s government relations strategy for Western Canada, in partnership with senior colleagues.
• Align the priorities and outcomes of a Western Canada government relations strategy with ongoing initiatives involving other provincial governments and the Government of Canada.
• Hold regular meetings with relevant government officials - including elected leaders, political staff, and departmental staff.
• Draft formal communications to the government including submitting feedback on government discussion papers.
• Represent Carbon Removal Canada at government briefings, hearings, and related events.
• Track political happenings to ensure our policy advocacy strategy has maximum impact.
• Undertake similar activities to the above with relevant staff from political parties.

Stakeholder relationships:

• Identify and engage other stakeholders who will be influential on topics related to our policy agenda, such as industry associations, nonprofits, and community organizations.
• Attend and present at relevant events, such as conferences, forums, and conventions.
• Help lead the design and implementation of events that Carbon Removal Canada holds in Western Canada.

Policy development:

• Working with our policy team, help develop persuasive policy positions relating to the rapid and responsible scale-up of carbon removal technologies.
• Pressure test policy positions within your network and work with relevant internal and external stakeholders to adapt them as needed.
• Draft briefing notes and other policy-related assets to support our advocacy work.

What you’ll bringYou must love working with busy people and enjoy the challenge of getting their attention. Every day, you will be calling, emailing, and holding multiple meetings with external stakeholders.All candidates must be/have:

• 5 - 10 years of work experience primarily in a policy role within government and/or conducting government relations, preferably with the Government of Alberta.
• Ability to work independently, while also being an effective collaborator. You will need to be a self-starter and how to adapt in a fast-paced and quickly changing environment but we often also work across teams and responsibilities to get things done!
• An understanding of complex political dynamics across government departments and among provinces, and how they might affect otherwise well-designed policy proposals.
• A highly effective communicator who can make compelling presentations to small and large groups, even when the topic is technical in nature.
• Existing connections in the Albertan government.
• A track record of success translating ideas into official government policy
• Experience building durable political coalitions and overcoming barriers to enacting or effectively implementing policies.
• Willingness to travel as needed

• While the Carbon Removal Canada team works remotely, the successful candidate for this role will be located in the province of Alberta, in close proximity to Calgary and Edmonton and you must be able to drive to attend meetings in either city.
• Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada.
• We typically work standard hours (9AM to 5PM EST), but are much more concerned about results and getting things done effectively than we are about what hours you work.
• We will hold in-person team meetings and retreats quarterly to collaborate in person. Additional ad-hoc meetings may be necessary where in-person collaboration is preferable. Senior staff should be ready to travel to events representing the organization as needed.

What we offer

• Carbon Removal Canada is deeply committed to providing competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits to our employees. The salary range for this position is CA$120,000 - $140,000 per annum with opportunities for growth. To manage expectations and save time, we will discuss alignment on compensation in your first meeting with us.
