Job Description

Education Assistant: Mon to Thurs 7.5 hours a day.The Centre for Autism Services Alberta is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children, teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Established in 1997, the Centre has grown to offer a wide range of services to individuals on the spectrum and their families, and is the largest accredited autism service provider in northern Alberta. Its mission is to provide comprehensive and innovative supports and services to those affected by ASD.The people we serve come from all walks of life and so do we. We welcome the unique contributions future staff can bring in terms of education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, nation of origin, age, languages spoken, color, religion, different abilities, sexual orientation and beliefs.The Education Assistant (EA) works as a collaborative member of the PUF team under the direct supervision of the Teacher and with secondary support from the Multidisciplinary team. The EA implements individualized program plans for autistic children and other developmental delays under the direction of the teacher or a team of health and non-health professionals as delegated by the Centre.General Responsibilities:

  • Work in groups and one-to-one with children with autism and other developmental delays in the Centre onsite school
  • Provide direct implementation of strategies from the child’s IPP to improve child functioning
  • Provide support to all other classroom staff
  • Develop and assist in the creation of visuals, social stories and other support materials as required
  • Consult and collaborate with the PUF Team as required
  • Attend IPP meetings as requested
  • Prepare and/or contribute to critical incident reports as required Effectively communicate with the parents and the Centre PUF team
  • Positively promote The Centre for Autism at all times
  • Report any circumstances to the PUF Team that might affect the client and/or services (e.g., illness, relocation, medication, changes in family dynamics, etc.)
  • Assist PUF Team in collecting data related to individualized program plan
  • Write daily sessions notes or complete daily data logs Prepare instructional materials as directed by the team or teacher
Professional Presentation:
  • Maintain client dignity by honoring the right to individual choice and freedom of mobility wherever possible
  • Only use physical prompting procedures after receiving direct instruction from the teacher or PUF team on how to do so safely and ethically
  • Maintain professional boundaries (e.g., avoid dual relationships, conflicts of interest, etc.)
  • Maintain confidentiality of child and family information
  • Work from a family centered care model of practice that values the role and voice of the family
  • Accept supervisory feedback to maintain and improve performance
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative and collaborative relationship with families and other caregivers as well as with the professional team
Qualifications – Education and Experience
  • Completing or completed Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in a related field or similar combined education and experience
  • Courses in psychology, behavior analysis, education, social work, special needs, nursing, rehabilitation, early childhood development, and occupational therapy or speech language pathology are considered an asset. Specialized training is provided.
  • 6 months of experience working as an Aide, or equivalent, with children with autism and other developmental delays is preferred
  • Additional experience working with children and/or other special needs population is an asset
  • Clear Police Information check, Clean Intervention Record check and valid First Aid with Child and Infant CPR
