This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.Department summaryThe Office of Rural and Regional Health coordinates initiatives and supports the development of new healthcare programs for rural and regional Alberta. We seek to weave rural and regional health through the education and training of UofA medical students and residents.Our goal is to enlighten each learner with an in-depth understanding of the unique challenges - and the sense of fulfillment - learners gain while working in Albertas vibrant rural and regional communities.Position summaryReporting to the Director, Office of Rural and Regional Health, the Education Specialist is responsible for supporting the learning environments in which students and residents are located. This includes areas related to instructional design, eLearning, contemporary pedagogy, innovation in teaching and learning, and educational technology.The successful candidate will benefit from a thorough understanding of distributed medical education, instructional design, and the use of digital learning technologies. Assisting with online Program Delivery and Curriculum Management System (PDCMS) of the Integrated Community Clerkship (ICC) for third-year medical students in rural communities is the first priority of the Education Specialist.The successful candidate, although working directly for the Integrated Community Clerkship in the Office of Rural and Regional Health, will have roles in other distributed medical education programs, in the design and delivery of faculty development, and in the collaborative development and implementation of academic technologies in the Faculty of Medicine & DentistryDutiesLearner Support

  • Support and steward rural medical education program delivery technologies for the programs facilitated by the ORRH, revising where needed to address the educational needs of learners in unique educational settings while ensuring that all program delivery materials and systems are aligned with the Program Delivery and Curriculum Management System (PDCMS). This will primarily be support for the Integrated Clinical Clerkship (ICC), and secondarily for Preclinical Networked Medical Education (PNME), Year 4 Partnership in Grande Prairie, and the Rural Family Medicine Clerkship.
  • Support the development of materials for the yearly Rural ICC Orientation Week and Transition Weeks programming.
  • Support the development and delivery of the formative and summative assessments for the ICC program, and other curricular events throughout the year.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of online content delivery for rural and remote learners. Survey the accessibility of online delivery for rural and remote learners. This may include understanding such things as physical learning environments and internet access in remote communities.
  • Work with the rural education leads, with the medical school as a whole when necessary, and with faculty-wide Academic Technologies to evolve a PDCMS that will meet the needs of the distributed learners.
  • Collaborate with the other members of the ORRH and the medical school to help develop a continuous quality improvement process for the educational component of all rural medical education programs overseen by the ORRH to ensure pedagogically sound programs that are current and meet the relevant accreditation standards.
Faculty Support
  • Revise orientation materials for all teachers and faculty members involved in rural medical education programs of ORRH and revise where appropriate.
  • Support and steward the digital technology required for delivery of both the Rural Medical Education Program (RMED) - a faculty development resource for rural preceptors, and the Rural Family Medicine Residency Programs. This work will be done collaboratively with the Department of Family Medicine.
  • Provide support and direction to faculty members involved in the content, facilitation and oversight of all rural medical education programs and help to implement new learning events where appropriate.
  • Work with Faculty-level initiatives to strengthen current online teaching and learning platforms/modalities and, where appropriate, recommend and introduce new synchronous and asynchronous modalities as well as identify and recommend process and work-flow changes to address needs of learners, faculty, and administrators.
  • Assist faculty members to identify necessary learning materials, online modules and other support materials, e.g. facilitation guides, for all the educational programs in the ORRH. This may include staying familiar with emerging teaching and learning tools, initiatives and trends to inform faculty and staff with ideas, guidance and recommendations.
Committee representationThe Education Specialist is a standing member of the following committees: Integrated Community Clerkship Education Committee, Preclinical Networked Medical Education Committee, ORRH Faculty Development Committee and will be expected to collaborate with others in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and with the Medical School. This may include representing the ORRH on Academic Technology and Information Services and Technology (IST) committees of the FoMD and UofA.Continuous Quality Improvement and Scholarship
  • Collaborate with the other members of the ORRH and the Program Evaluation Unit for the medical school to help develop and maintain the continuous quality improvement process for the educational component of all rural medical education programs overseen by the ORRH.
  • Assist with the preparation and dissemination of materials related to ORRH educational innovations in appropriate academic venues such as conferences, journals and online communities.
Qualifications
  • Masters level training in areas of Adult Education, Instructional Design or other relevant discipline
  • 2-5 years experience with a variety of educational technologies and online learning tools (e.g. learning management systems, video communication applications, lecture recording, video editing and audio editing, Google Apps and wikis)
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver online educational materials
