Job Description

FTE: 0.8Position Status: Permanent No Months Per Year: 10Rate of Pay: $23,264 - $32,912 Employee Group: UniforPosting Closing Date: 10/31/22The job assists the teacher in the implementation and delivery of instructional plans and developmental strategies for students. The job provides a range of assistance to address specific needs including personal and physical care.The job works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to assist the student in developing academic, fine and gross motor skills, behavioural and cognitive skills. The job works under the direction of Teachers, Therapeutic Specialists and Assistants and to follow through on developmental strategies to enhance learning.Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist teacher with planning, preparing and implementing programs to meet the needs of the students
  • Work with the teacher to adapt creative learning strategies for young children
  • Modify educational materials to support the curriculum (i.e. games and activities)
  • Work closely with the student to enable effective usage of assistive technology
  • Work with student to maintain focus and to remain on task
  • Document and record observations on student’s progress and learning in the log and communication book
  • Organize classroom materials, activities, equipment and programs
  • Meet with specialists to understand developmental plans, receive direction and discuss options on ways to improve students’progress and growth
  • Work with student daily to improve physical, behavioural and cognitive delays
  • Implement developmental strategies as prescribed by the specialist such as guided walking and stretching exercises
  • Observe and record the student’s development, progress and behaviour
  • Provide respective specialist with information and anecdotal notes to update on student’s progress
  • Attend to the specific needs of student
  • Provide a range of personal and physical care
  • Escort student to and from transportation each day
  • Follow the behavioural support plan as prescribed by a Behavioural Specialist and/or Teacher
  • Monitor the student in accordance with the behavioural support plan
  • Assist student in adapting to the classroom, developing social skills, self-esteem, independence and interaction with others
  • Monitor student throughout the day to ensure safety and to anticipate needs
  • Assist co-workers during peak periods and absences
  • Work with other students
  • Participate in school activities, special events and projects
  • Provide other support and perform duties as directed
Qualifications Include:High school diploma, with post-secondary courses in an area related to child and youth care or special needs education, plus one year directly related experience. An equivalent combination of experience and qualifications will be considered
  • Knowledge of Crisis Intervention techniques and strategies, First Aid, CPR, and administering medication
  • Knowledge of classroom routines, equipment and assistive technology
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Office 365, Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer
  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Legislation specifically related to student records management
  • Knowledge of Workplace Safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Awareness of behavioural analytics principles
  • Understanding of school and Division programs and an awareness of the Alberta Education curriculum
  • Good observation skills and the ability to record data
  • Good teamwork skills and the ability to work in partnership with the teacher to implement instructional plans
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to meet the educational, physical, emotional and behavioural needs of the student
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain communication with students, teachers and specialists
  • Ability to communicate with sensitivity, diplomacy and tact is essential
  • Ability to effectively communicate in the English language both verbal and written
  • Ability to work with students which may require lifting, squatting, kneeling and bending
