Job Description

Energy Systems SpecialistJob Number : 45146The Energy Systems Specialist is subject matter expert and key contact as the City’s sustainable fleet continues to evolve using their knowledge and experience with emerging energy technologies. Working with the engineering staff, they will be involved with a variety of technical and analytical activities to support the program and they will be relied upon to plan and accomplish the established goals.Reporting to the General Supervisor of Maintenance Planning and Engineering, the Energy Systems Specialist is a highly independent role responsible for providing oversight to the City’s current and emerging energy systems such as the charging infrastructure for the current fleet of 60 electric buses, the growing Photovoltaic installations, and potential energy storage systems. A significant focus will be on diagnosing connectivity issues and coordinating repairs with the vendor and/or internal Facility Maintenance staff to maintain optimal availability.This will involve working closely with the mechanical and electrical facility maintenance and garage leadership staff to identify technical issues with the charging and infrastructure and proactively implement changes to mitigate the service disruptions. Monitoring and process documentation will be developed to establish clear Standard Operating Procedures for all aspects of the charging systems and repair process.Some key responsibilities will include:

  • Interpret specifications and design/repair requirements for staff or contractors; monitor progress and quality
  • Daily oversight of the electrical management system for sufficient bus charging requirements and ability to accurately diagnose connectivity issues with the electrical power
  • Create work orders for all service requirements and Communicate with the pantograph OEM to report charging failures and coordinate repairs with vendors or internal maintenance staff
  • Develop and/or use complex computer models to forecast the level of required services and the cost of such services under different scenarios.
  • Understanding of solar production and rooftop installations and the applicable OH&S risks; conduct applicable safety assessments in accordance with established criteria
  • Ensure manufacturer OEM guides are linked/available to maintenance staff
  • Lead and support the occupational health and safety initiatives related to the energy program e.g. Lock Out Tag Out procedures
  • Ensure the ongoing work and SOPs align with the application City of Edmonton OH&S guidelines and are appropriately vetted and approved
  • Perform other related tasks as required
Qualifications :
  • Completion of a 2 year diploma in an appropriate Engineering technological program
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related field is required
  • Must be eligible to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy which may require business auto insurance
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively lead projects and build the required relationships with contractors and internal staff to comfortably enforce regulations, set expectations, and effectively manage issues
  • Knowledge of alternative energy technologies such as Solar Photovoltaic, Combined Heat and Power, Energy Storage Systems, Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the engineering terminology and techniques related to the work assigned.
  • Effective financial and business acumen to support the evolving work; make decisions and/or recommendations based on budget, timelines, service requirements, and program goals
