Job Description

Equipment Operator I / Labourer I - Active Pathways Removal (Nights) Up to 7 monthsJob Number : 44546At the City of Edmonton - City Operations, we strive to help our people achieve their professional and personal goals through an inclusive environment that values everyone’s contributions, appreciates diversity of thought, fosters growth and provides continuous opportunities for development.Our Labourer I / Equipment Operator I is a dual classification position on the Snow & Ice Control - Active Pathway Removals team. In this position you will perform both duties of a Labourer and Equipment Operator work as needed by the work area and dependant on the weather. With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:Labourer I

  • Perform heavy manual work with the use of hand tools
  • Operate light delivery vehicles transporting materials and supplies, and direct traffic during street construction projects
  • Load and unload materials from trucks, and perform general housekeeping duties on yardsites
  • Collect refuse in parks, playgrounds and streets; cut, clear and burn brush
  • Manually sweep and apply traction aids to sidewalks
  • Remove snow around bridges, sidewalks, stairways and approaches,bus stops, and sand slippery sidewalks and crosswalks
  • Manually fill sandboxes and traction aid materials at public access sites
  • Inspect trails and brush lines for hazards or maintenance concerns
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Understand city policy and procedures
  • Perform other related duties as required
Equipment Operator I
  • Operate and be responsible for various equipment, including 72” industrial riding mower/broom/blower, smaller riding brooms and blowers, small tractors with blades/snow buckets and various snow clearing equipment used in parkland and facilities
  • Operate medium and small farm and industrial type tractors used to pull various attachments, such as grass mowers, fertilizer spreaders, utility trailers, small plows and rollers
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on equipment
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications :
  • Completion of Grade 10
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner, including detecting minor defects in equipment as needed
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform heavy manual labour, including lifting up to 50 lbs, for extended periods of time in various environmental and weather conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience operating the equipment assigned to the work area, including toolcats, John Deere brooms, trackless snow removal equipment and/or low horsepower tractors is an asset
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position.
  • Standard First Aid Certification would be considered an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers Licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers Permit is a requirement of this position
