Job Description

OpportunityAre you a passionate and dynamic storyteller Are you a culture connoisseur who is fluent in online trends with a sixth sense of what’s coming next when it comes to the media discourse of the day Do you love data and the insights it can glean to make your external communications even more powerful and effective If you answered yes to these questions, you could be who we’re looking for – an External Communications Manager to own our firm’s social media presence and play an important role in shaping our story with traditional media. Reporting to the Managing Director, Communications and Corporate Identity, the External Communications Manager will be data-driven, creatively inclined and responsible for the management of both owned and earned external communications efforts. This includes the implementation of a comprehensive media relations, social media and corporate thought leadership strategy aimed at enhancing AIMCo’s national and international profile and visibility with media, our clients and their beneficiaries, as well as investment partners and industry influencers.Working closely with our investment and operational teams to source and secure stories we can amplify externally that will position AIMCo as a sophisticated institutional investor, committed to our clients, communities, and the people of Alberta.From a social media perspective, you will conceptualize, implement, and manage social media marketing strategies – both paid and organic, while developing and maintaining a robust content calendar, inclusive of visual asset creation, copywriting, scheduling, and posting, training KPIs and using data to inform the future strategy.From a media relations perspective, you will support the external communications director in creating supporting communications materials, pitching angles and stories to media and responding to media requests, working with agencies, building and developing media and influencer relationships and lists, monitoring media coverage and continuously assessing the effectiveness of media relations strategies.From a thought leadership perspective, you’ll have the opportunity to work with members of our dynamic senior leadership team to develop industry points of view and thought leadership aligned to the discourse of the day.This is an exciting opportunity to make an impact and elevate AIMCO’s brand position on a global level.Responsibilities

  • Serving as an expert on our Canadian media relations approach and social media content strategy and collaborating with senior leaders and other key stakeholders from all across the business, while staying up to date with the latest trends, tools, and applications
  • Develop the strategic vision of AIMCo’s owned social channel approach and manage the delivery for continuous improvement while promoting an innovative external communications function for the organization
  • Oversee, in partnership with the external communications director, both reactive and proactive media communications, corporate media engagements, events, and key messages regarding day-to-day enterprise activities and propose tactics and tools to help AIMCo best communicate externally in a timely and professional manner while serving the media 24/7, 365 day a year
  • Maintain an ongoing understanding of the media landscape in Canada, becoming a trusted source to tier 1 journalists.
  • Collaborating with internal and external partners to develop results-driven organic and paid social media strategies based on clear business and measurement objectives
  • Oversee social media accounts’ design and layout and create, edit, publish and share engaging content on Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Create and manage a content calendar, aligned with internal and external communications plans, that will promote brand awareness and affinity
  • Managing external vendors as appropriate, including collaborating on a regular basis with strategic partners from social media platforms, as well as public relations partners such as PR agencies.
  • Participating in the communication team’s crisis management efforts and oversee the media relations inbox and respond in a timely manner to all relevant inbound media queries
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • 8+ years of overall marketing experience with a minimum of 4 years of experience dedicated to social media and a minimum of 3 years of experience in media relations
  • University degree or diploma in Communications, Advertising or other, relevant field
  • Direct experience working with senior executives
  • Strong content writing and editing skills
  • Excellent communication skills for varied audiences and proficient use of Adobe Creative Suite or similar
  • Comfortable in dealing with varied audiences, including senior executives.
  • Solid understanding of media relations and public relations
  • Solid understanding social media and the digital landscape (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) and online user experience, including the identification of social media trends
  • Superior and proven organization and project management skills
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of autonomy and initiative & passion for quick-evolving social media environment
  • Experience partnering with social media management tool providers to drive Enterprise use cases and optimize corporate social program
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to AIMCo’s core values of excellence, transparency, humility, integrity and collaboration, and inspires the same in others
