Job Description

Standard General Edmonton has an exciting opportunity in our paving division for Finish Asphalt Rakers. For individuals who have prior experience as a Raker, we are also willing to consider for training for an operating position with a Screed. Prior knowledge of road construction and/or paving is considered an asset.Summary: The Finish Asphalt Raker’s main purpose is to perform a variety of tasks including using rake to redistribute the asphalt mix more correctly as it leaves the screed and is ready for rolling. May operate a variety of hand and power tools as well as some equipment. Works as part of the paving crew primarily raking asphalt, shoveling excess asphalt and sweeping up debris. May be asked to complete a variety of other general labour assignments such as clean and prepare sites as well as to promote safety and participate in the Goal Zero initiative.Duties/Tasks:

  • Positively participate in the Company safety program and adhere to all safety requirements
  • Exhibit behavior that aligns with core values of Safety, Growth, Integrity, Quality and Collaboration
  • Spread asphalt using efficient techniques and maintaining a good pace.
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labour.
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools.
  • Maintain a clean job site, pick up tools and equipment in order to eliminate potential hazards.
  • May be required to alternate duties with operating various machines
Knowledge/Skills:
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn and develop new skills as required for the role.
  • Ability to take direction.

  • Must exhibit a strong work ethic.
  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding role requiring repetitive tasks such as raking, shovelling, heavy lifting, standing, walking, reaching and manual dexterity over extended periods of time under adverse field conditions.
  • Must have good vision, stamina, hand-eye coordination, and an ability to ensure drainage and drivability ensuring quality workmanship.
  • Must be alert and able to work safely around moving road construction equipment.
Experience/Education:
  • 1 to 2 years Asphalt Paving is considered an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license (Alberta Class 5, or equivalent) with own transportation is required.
Working Conditions:
  • Travel between local job sites as required.
  • Overtime, evenings and weekends as required.
  • Work outdoors in a dusty and noisy construction environment, potentially in adverse weather conditions.
  • Potential to drive company vehicles or equipment.
  • Must meet and adhere to all safety requirements and applicable safety policies, including pre-employment drug, alcohol, and medical testing.
