Job Description

First Nations Technical Services Advisory Group Inc. (TSAG) provides technical services and training for Alberta First Nations in the Treaty 6, 7 and 8 Regions.TSAG is seeking a highly motivated individual to take on the responsibility of a full-time Fire Field Officer in our Edmonton office. The position will report directly to the Manager, Fire Protection & Prevention and will be responsible for developing, organizing, delivering and supporting a variety of fire service training and fire alarm system inspections & education as well prevention and protection programs and services for First Nations within Alberta.Scope:The TSAG Fire Field Officer is responsible for the development, delivery and reporting of both accredited and non-accredited fire training programs in First Nations communities within Alberta. The Fire Field Officer will actively contribute to fire service training program development and delivery of existing programming materials. This position will also work with First Nations communities and work with fire departments to ensure support is provided for existing in-house training programs already in place. The Fire Field Officer will also assist team members with instruction as well as the completion of Fire Department Assessments, Fire Flow Assessments and Fire and Life Safety Inspections in First Nations communities, working with TSAG departments as required.Required Duties:

  • Liaise with First Nation Fire Department Training Officers and their agencies on common projects and mandates
  • Liaise with Federal and Provincial allied agencies
  • Develop and expand portfolio elements
  • Perform administrative duties associated with program delivery including, but not limited to, ad hoc reporting, inspection reporting, statistical analysis
  • Ensure the delivery of high quality and meaningful fire related training, fire system inspections, and support services
  • Schedule and maintain accredited fire service training programs eligible for IFSAC and Pro-Board certification
  • Schedule and maintain non-accredited fire services training programs eligible for local certification
  • Work with agencies policing First Nations
  • Take part in fire prevention educational delivery sessions as needed or required
  • Participate in the instructional delivery of relevant fire service programming
  • Maintain professional association membership/involvement related to the fire service, and CEU for certification
  • Understand and follow occupational health and safety acts, regulations and codes
  • Understand and actively practice all TSAG health and safety policies, standards, safe work practices and general guidelines
  • Assist and guide First Nations Fire Departments on funding access for:
Fire Halls; Fire Apparatus; Firefighting Equipment; Firefighter Training; and, Fire Hall Renovations.
  • Produce comprehensive reports compliant with reporting requirements and funding expectations within reporting deadlines
  • Actively contribute to the development of department productivity goals
  • Initiate and maintain partnerships for fire training, fire prevention and protection services
  • Maintain comprehensive reporting procedures and ensure guidelines are effectively communicated and implemented
  • Develop yearly work plan and contribute input to operating budgets
  • Coordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications include:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience within the fire department
  • Strong excel and word skills in Microsoft office package
  • NFPA Certification in the following:
o NFPA 1001 Level I / Level II Preferred – Professional Firefighter; o NFPA 472 Operations Level – HAZMAT Operations Level; o NFPA 1021 Level I – Fire Service Officer considered an asset; o NFPA 1041 Level I – Fire Service Instructor considered an asset.
  • ICS 100, 200, 300 – Incident Command System certification (ICS Canada) considered an asset
  • Certification as a Safety Codes Officer in the Fire Discipline with:
    • Alberta Group B1 certification in good standing required
    • Alberta Group B2 certification in good standing required
    • Alberta Group C1 certification in good standing considered an asset
    • Alberta Group C2 certification in good standing considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Fire Code, Alberta Building Code, Alberta Safety Codes Act, Emergency Management Act, and the Forest and Prairie Protection Act
  • Relevant OH&S courses and certification considered an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills
  • Punctual and reliable team player
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of situations
  • Knowledge/experience/understanding of First Nations Cultural Traditions is an asset
  • Willing to travel throughout Alberta including remote locations.
  • Valid clean drivers record Class 5 Vehicle Operators license as well as a reliable and insured vehicle
