Job Description

Reporting to the Director of People and Culture, this position will be responsible for the holistic development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive range of employee health, safety and wellness programs to meet the goals and legal obligations of the organization. The successful candidate will take a "boots on the ground" approach to promoting health, safety and wellness programs throughout the organization.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and expertise to the organization on health, safety and wellness matters, ensuring regulatory compliance while fostering a positive, healthy and safe workplace.
  • Accountable for safe work practices through due diligence and extensive knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver exceptional safety leadership guidance in line with the organization’s values by effectively working with all employees and contractors to reduce risk and improve safety culture.
  • Promote consistent health and safety practices through active participation in all aspects of Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness programs including regular inspections, safety meetings, investigations and involvement with planned organizational events.
  • Identify, research and write recommendations for health, safety and wellness programs, policies and procedures, and priorities to align with organizational focused health and safety requirements and initiatives and implement and communicate changes effectively.
  • Oversee the coordination and operation of the joint health & safety committee and actively provide advice and resources, when required.
  • Take the lead on all accident investigations to determine root cause and provide and implement recommendations to mitigate future risk and ensure all incident investigations and reporting meets the required standard of quality.
  • Contribute to proactive and integrated coordination of case management covering occupational and non-occupational injuries or illnesses with the appropriate leadership team members, including review of medical evidence, rehabilitation efforts, graduated or light-duty return to work initiatives and requests for accommodation.
  • Ensure timely claims management processes and ongoing efficient maintenance of appropriate WCB and OH&S records.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership team to address and correct performance related health, safety and wellness concerns and issues.
  • Assess, develop and deliver health, safety and wellness training programs to address operational needs.
  • Monitor effectiveness of the Employee and Family Assistance Program and related services.
  • Work closely with the Director of People and Culture to maintain the overall functioning of health, safety and wellness programs, including administering the budget, maintaining applicable documentation, establishing performance measures, and preparing and analyzing reports;
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment and practices in order to ensure compliance of safety standards and government regulations.
  • Participate in the development of site- specific safe work methods, practices, procedures and job analysis to include physical demands.
  • Assess and control hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment and provide recommendations to the leadership team.
  • Identify, establish and maintain emergency preparedness requirements and plans.
  • Monitor, review and report monthly health and safety performance indicators/measures.
  • Educate employees at all levels of the organization on health and safety program initiatives and trends.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and privacy of information at all times.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-Secondary diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field of study.
  • Completion of, or working towards Occupational Health & Safety Certificate.
  • Minimum five years’ progressively responsible experience in a Health & Safety role in a multi-faceted midsized organization.
  • A positive track record of demonstrating exceptional safety leadership behavior and promoting a safety culture.
  • Thorough knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations and Workers’ Compensation legislation.
  • Experience in facilitating formal risk assessments and a thorough understanding of operational risk management systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in incident investigations and root cause analysis techniques.
  • A thorough understanding and experience in utilizing change management principles.
  • A thorough understanding of emergency preparedness and emergency response experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation abilities.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Above average proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including SharePoint.
  • Excellent verbal written communication skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License/2 Mill. Liability Insurance/Driver’s Abstract/use of personal vehicle and Criminal Police Security Clearance.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
