Highlights of the jobWe are hiring up to one (1) Full Time, Temporary (up to 11 months) Industrial Wastewater Inspector working out of Eastgate in Edmonton, AB!As the Industrial Wastewater Inspector, you will be responsible for fieldwork involving sampling, monitoring, inspecting, and completing assessments to ensure the enforcement of Bylaws within the overall objectives and targets of the Industrial Monitoring program. This includes manually analyzing or using automatic samplers to established sampling protocols and achieving the safe collection, assessment, documentation, and delivery of representative water/wastewater samples to the laboratory. Routine inspection of hauled wastewater carriers and checking related bylaw requirements and documentation is a secondary duty.What you’d be responsible for

• Providing input to the Compliance Manager on plans and directions, and ensuring on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.
• Collecting water and wastewater samples from manholes, vacuum trucks and designated sampling points using a variety of manual and automated equipment and techniques in accordance with established sampling protocols.
• Delivering representative water/wastewater samples to the laboratory for analysis.
• Performing visual and field-test kit assessment of samples, documenting the results, observations and other related data.
• Performing Safe Work Plans at all work sites and ensuring that all necessary hazard controls are in place or in use.
• Using the following programs:
  • POSSE and Excel for data entry and recording
  • GeoFIT and DRAINS to locate and assess sampling sites
  • Entrapass and C-Cure to run and check billing reports and manifests
  • Oracle and Outlook for general work functions (email, timecards, etc.)
• Issuing notices for specified minor bylaw infractions as required. Major infractions are referred to Investigators and/or City Bylaw Officers, and may require the assistance of this position.
• Planning and driving an efficient daily sample collection route to a wide variety of sites including off-road locations and private property, under all types of traffic and environmental conditions.
• Performing hauled wastewater inspections at wastewater transfer stations, including obtaining representative samples (manually or using automated samplers), performing field tests, retrieving data and video footage, collecting and checking manifests, generating reports and billing, and assisting in managing sites and card/access control.
• Calculating appropriate flow rates and volumes, and checking for vulnerable infrastructure downstream.

What’s required to be successful

• High school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
• A two (2) year diploma in Environmental, Chemical, or Biological Sciences from a recognized post-secondary educational institute is required. Degrees or diplomas from similar programs may also be considered.
  • At least one course in Grade 12 Chemistry or Biology from a recognized educational institute is required.
• Demonstrable working knowledge of EPCOR Drainage Services and Wastewater Treatment Bylaw 19627 and City of Edmonton Drainage Bylaw 18093.
  • If you do not meet this requirement, you must be able to demonstrate this knowledge within 6 months of commencement.
• 1+ years of experience in an environmental, chemical or biological sciences related position is required.
• Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operators License, or operators licensing equivalent recognized by Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002 with 6 or fewer demerits.
• Ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR drivers permit.
• A five (5) year Commercial Drivers Abstract will be required at the time of hire.
• Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office (i.e. Outlook, Excel) and with data collection and database usage.
• Ability and willingness to perform work in all types of weather during all four seasons, frequent entering and exiting of vehicle at a variety of locations such as industrial, commercial and institutional facilities.
• Able to meet the physical demands required of this position, which will include physical strength and dexterity to perform medium to heavy work and frequent lifting of materials weighing up to fifty pounds. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.

Additionally, some desired assets for the Industrial Wastewater Investigator to have include:

• Strong exposure to environmental legislation, pollution prevention, waste minimization, treatment and disposal methods.
• Eligible to be a certified member of the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET).
• Alberta Environment Wastewater Collection Operator Certification.

• This rate may change subject to ratification of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
