Job Description

GENERAL OVERVIEWThe mission for the Senior’s program at Africa Centre is to reduce social isolation and improve the life of elders through skills development and current support. We are the largest pan African non-profit organization in Western Canada serving as a community hub based in Edmonton and Calgary Alberta. We provide high quality programming and access to services from a place of cultural awareness and competency for families as well as seniors. We are seeking to enhance the life of older adults by providing learning opportunities to achieve better social wellbeing.JOB SUMMARYThe Digital Skills Instructor for Older Adults works under the direction of the Seniors Program Coordinator to facilitate, assist, plan and deliver courses on digital skills in a classroom setting. Each older adult will be using a program laptop and the instructor will design and teach in a fun and engaging way for seniors of African descent enrolled in the program. The course is meant for people who have little or no experience using electronic devices such as laptop and desktop computers, smartphones and tablets. Some participation barriers that older adult in this program experience include: living alone, limited English speaking and communication skills, being a racialized person, having mobility issues, and having a low income status.KEY RESPONSABILITIES

  • Willingness to work as a team member and support the mission and goals of Africa Centre’s Seniors Program.
  • Develop and deliver the course content for seniors including classroom management in a fun and engaging way.
  • Organizing and administering pre/post surveys for seniors.
  • Providing one on one assistance to ensure participants understand course content.
  • Maintaining accurate records of learners attending the class.
  • Working with the program coordinator, community connectors as well as the participants to ensure an increased level of active knowledge about digital skills and gaining access to additional resources to meet their needs that will have a positive impact on their lives.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 3+ years experience with issues around social justice and working with marginalized groups as well as community development.
  • A desire to make a positive impact to the lives of African older adults.
  • Familiar with African Canadian communities and their unique experiences and barriers
  • Strong problem-solving skills including time management.
  • Experience with public speaking, classroom, and group facilitation.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft office and major online platforms) smart phone apps’ use.
  • Knowledge and skills using email platforms, social media applications, instant messaging applications, video conferencing applications, online shopping platforms, online search platforms and telehealth platforms.
  • Degree preferred in social work, psychology, education, or related experience
  • A retired instructor or teacher will be an ideal candidate.
  • Additional language an asset.
This is a part-time position with a wage of $250 per week which includes 4 hours for in-class instruction (2 sessions) and 2-3 hours prep work per week for 10 weeks. Professional Development opportunities with Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association (ECALA) are provided and covered by the program.
