Please indicate your internal status using the "Advertisement" drop down menu when applying.This position offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at: Faculty & Staff Benefits.The University of Alberta is looking for a motivated and collaborative Intermediate Systems Administrator to join the Unix Infrastructure Services team.Reporting to the Team Lead, the Intermediate Systems Administrator provides system administration duties to ensure the availability, efficiency and security of all servers that run on premise and the public cloud. The Intermediate Systems Administrator provides input and information in the planning, implementation, configuration of new services, and participates in developing procedures and standards for reliable and sustainable operation of Unix and Linux servers.Duties

  • Administers a large number of Linux/BSD/Unix servers that run on premise or in the public Cloud and that run critical University services.
  • Applies system and security patches as in defined guidelines and best practices.
  • Provides input in developing standards for servers - operating systems, security policies, and best practices.
  • Performs disaster recovery and data restore tests per defined guidelines to ensure business continuity.
  • Proactively and reactively handles alerts produced by the central monitoring service.
  • Documents any information gaps on new and existing servers and services.
  • Acts as technical liaison to clients.
  • General administration of departmental and campus wide file systems.
  • Installation and configuration of operating systems and security tools on both physical and virtual servers.
  • Works with other teams and clients to ensure systems are configured and deployed properly and in accordance with the team’s policies.
  • Documents systems architecture, configurations, critical procedures.
  • Leverages automation technologies to help with deployment of servers and configuration, as well as installation of tools and software.
  • Leverages scripting languages and technologies to automate repeatable or frequently done tasks.
  • Troubleshoots issues affecting users and performs root cause analysis and works with vendors to develop workarounds or solutions to problems.
  • Researches and recommends technologies to enhance the efficiency of operations and quality of service, such as cloud services and automation.
  • Provides input in planning for future improvement, in architecting and deploying new services.
  • Provides rotating on-call support.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science or related field or equivalent Technical Diploma combined with relevant experience
  • Minimum 4 years of working experience with Linux systems as a system administrator in large and complex IT environment
  • Working knowledge of virtualization, systems security, cloud technology, automation tools
  • Programming/scripting experience with C, Perl, Python, sh/ksh/bash
  • Analytical and diagnostic skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, intuitive and empathetic listening skills and presentation skills
  • Innovative self-starter, with the ability to manage priorities and workloads under pressure
