This posting may be used to fill multiple positions.Reporting to the Team Lead, Unix Infrastructure Services, the Senior System Administrator provides system administration for servers that run critical and central University services located on premise and in the public cloud and ensures the availability, efficiency and security of all servers; Works with clients and other teams in preparation for the delivery of new services; Develops and refines procedures and standards for reliable and sustainable operation of servers.DutiesAdministers a large number of Linux servers that run critical and central University services located on premise or in the public Cloud.Ensures that all systems adhere to the team’s technical guidelines and best practices.Develops standards, implementation guidelines for servers - operating systems, security policies, best practicesDevelops and tests disaster recovery plans for critical services to ensure business continuityDesign and develop automation technologies and standards to help with systems administrationWorks with other teams and stakeholders to identify requirements and to design a solution that meets their technological and business needs.Test and modify implemented systems to ensure complete operational accuracy and reliability.Document all aspects of the implementation and ensure the orderly conversion of the implementation to a production level status.Troubleshoots issues affecting users and performs root cause analysis. Some issues may involve multiple systems/teams and affect hundreds to tens of thousands users or computers.Works with vendors to develop and implement solutions to resolve problems.Document configurations, critical procedures and actions to be taken in troubleshooting problemsResearches new technologies and makes recommendations for purchases to enhance the efficiency of operations and quality of service.Provides analysis of service usage and user activity statistics to forecast for future growth in order to enhance services.Contributes to the development of long term technical strategies for the teamProvides technical consultation to stakeholders (service owners or decision makers from faculties or departments) in delivering new services, troubleshooting problems.Leads team’s internal projects, draws members within the team as needed, and works with other teamsProvides rotating 24x7 on-call supportQualificationsBachelors degree in Computing Science or related field or equivalent Technical Diploma combined with relevant experienceMinimum 6 years of working experience with Linux systems as a system administrator in large and complex IT environmentWorking knowledge of virtualization, systems security, cloud technology, automation toolsProgramming/scripting experience with C, Perl, Python, sh/ksh/bashHow to ApplyNote: Online applications are accepted until midnight Mountain Standard Time of the closing date.We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted.The University of Alberta is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce.
