Job Description

Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school division whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The Division is comprised of over 44,000 students and 5,000 employees in 95 schools plus other sites.Position:ExistingPosition Status:PermanentHours Per Week:40No Months Per Year:12Rate of Pay:$61,284Empl Group:AUPEThe job supervises and directs a crew performing electronic related construction and maintenance activities on Division property. Responsibilities include electronic system installations such as Smartboard installation and configurations, projector installation and service calls, classroom sound-field system installations and repairs, network cabling installations, security system installations, access control installations. The incumbent will also assist with journeyman trades persons in the department to complete more technical installations and repairs.Assignments vary considerably depending on the unit served. To perform the range of work, as well as supervise others, the incumbent must display a complete understanding of the overall activities served. The work is carried out using a variety of hand tools, power tools and electronic test equipment. The incumbent works with minimal supervision after receiving direction from the supervisor.Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by Alberta electrical code, fire code, and building code, along with construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the district’s goals and objectives.There is considerable discretion and decision-making exercised by the incumbent in the performance of its regular duties.Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare work schedules, assign duties and inspect, assess and report on the performance of subordinates
  • Train staff in the correct methods and proper use and care of supplies and equipment on an ongoing basis
  • Ensure staff are properly informed as to procedures, policies, and any information from the department or Human Resource Services
  • Report any infractions of maintenance staff to the supervisor
  • Ensure injuries, accidents or first aid rendered, are reported in compliance with WCB regulations/legislation.
  • Ensure staff have access to WCB reporting forms and incidents are reported to the WCB Claims Management Specialist
  • Direct and monitor contract staff to ensure compliance with contract requirements, report any deviations and safety infractions to Supervisor
  • Supervise and direct electronic system installations and construction and maintenance activities performed by a crew
  • Assist with electronic system installation work and maintenance repair work as required (e.g. server room upgrade projects, new School electrical / electronic system fit up work)
  • Assist trades person with technical installations, reconfigurations, repairs, and trouble shooting.
  • Operate test equipment to verify installation are functioning as designed.
  • Assist with general cleanup of work sites, crawlspaces and confined areas
  • Responsible for safe delivery of all electronic equipment to installation site as required.
  • Maintain operational records for review by supervisor/manager
  • Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
  • Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards
  • Ensure equipment and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
  • Ensure supplies and materials are monitored and safely stored at all times
  • Secure building/worksite as required depending on worksite requirements
  • Ensure security systems are operating as designed
  • Ensure electronic systems are installed and performing as per manufacturers instruction
  • Test installed solution to meet customer requirements
  • Consult on best solution to meet specific room and performance requirements
  • Deliver electronic equipment and material to site.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • Certified in Convergent Network Technologies (CCNT) Certificate, Telecommunication certification or equivalent
  • Must have several years recent experience installing and terminating network cabling, installation electronic systems, such as smart interactive flat panels, projectors and interactive whiteboards, classroom sound-field systems.
  • Beldon network cabling certification is an asset
  • Epson certification is an asset
  • Smart Technologies certification is an asset
  • Working knowledge of Security systems, PA systems, Access Control systems.
  • Knowledge of Supervisory techniques, policies and procedures and the safe use of hand tools and electronic test equipment
  • Knowledge of the OHS regulations and legislation including working in confined spaces is required
  • Knowledge of regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business, and operations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet is required; knowledge of electronic attendance system is an asset
  • Valid Arc flash electrical training certification
  • Valid Elevated work platform training certification
  • Valid Fall protection training certification
  • Standard First Aid/CPR level C certification is an asset
  • Strong problem solving and time management skills and the ability to schedule and prioritize work
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, train and mentor staff
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
  • Self-motivated and proven track record of motivating staff
  • Good communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain good relationships with employees/crew
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Physically able to complete the duties of the Position using appropriate tools and techniques (constantly lifting up to 30 Kg/66l bs)
  • Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills is mandatory
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, principals, teachers, students, co-workers and the general public
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license; able to drive heavy equipment and able to travel to various sites within Edmonton and surrounding areas
  • Ability to provide a clean driver’s abstract upon hire and as requested
  • Possession of a complete set of recognized basic hand tools
