Reporting to the Director, Online Education, the incumbent will utilize a strong foundation in business and online education to oversee digital course design and development, to drive digital course evaluation and continuous improvement, and to develop and monitor processes and procedures as they relate to online course creation. The Manager will also engage in policy development work as appropriate and related to online learning at the university.The Manager, Online Education also has an external focus to elevate the University of Alberta’s reputation in online learning through presentations at conferences and events, award submissions, client opportunities, and other external activities that align to unit goals. Internally, the Manager will engage in committees, working groups, and other opportunities that will enable collaboration, awareness-building, and information sharing.Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with the HUB Directors and AVP to establish unit goals as they relate to online course design, development, and delivery
  • Oversee the online course design and development team to ensure pacing towards unit goals, metrics, and targets
  • Drive a culture of innovation, creativity, high-quality, and efficiency for the design and development of digital learning experiences
  • Collaborate with stakeholder groups to ensure Indigenous Initiatives and EDI are at the forefront of and represented across the digital learning experience
  • Collaborate with the Director of Online Education, Sr. Instructional Designer, and Project Manager to assign budget and resources (staff/pre-qualified contractors) to each new online project
  • Collaborate with IST to ensure the digital learning environment is optimized to support growth, scale, and quality of online programming at the U of A
  • Drive new initiatives and pilot projects that will enrich and enhance the digital learning experience
  • Understand digital governance structures and processes to ensure compliance with the introduction of new systems, tools, and technologies to support online learning and teaching
  • In collaboration with the Directors and stakeholders across the university, lead a digital badging strategy and implementation for university programming
  • Lead the development of an OCE Online Course Design & Development Guide to create scalable, replicable processes for the HUB; regularly review and update the Guide as needed
  • Develop a Quality Framework for OCE online programming and ensure application of the framework across all projects and initiatives
  • Establish and initiate course evaluation and content refresh cycles
  • In collaboration with OCE colleagues, create an OCE decision-making framework to analyze and vet new course and program opportunities
  • Seek out and draft submissions for external awards for innovative and exceptional online programming
  • Engage in professional development to boost and develop job-related skills
  • Research trends, best practices, and insights related to online learning and LX/UX
To be successful in this position, the incumbent will possess the following skills and experience:
  • Master’s degree in Education, Educational Technologies, Adult Education, Business Administration, or a related discipline; must have combined education and professional development in BOTH the field of online education and business/leadership
  • 5 - 8 years of work experience in online course design/production and in business operations and leadership
  • Experience consulting, supporting, and including Indigenous Initiatives and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (II and EDI) across the digital learning experience
  • Expert knowledge in trends and best practices for online learning for credit and non-credit programming
  • Experience working with learning management systems, course authoring tools like Articulate Rise & Storyline, online registration platforms, and digital badging is required
  • Knowledge of new and emerging digital learning tools and technologies, and how to integrate them into the digital learning environment
  • Experience with planning, business process mapping, frameworking, and strategy development with a demonstrated ability to draft plans and process documentation
  • Experience with online course evaluation and continuous improvement as part of the lifecycle of online courses and programs
