If your values are aligned with our values and beliefs listed at: http://boylestreet.org/who-we-are/mission-and-history/, please consider joining our team.JOB PURPOSE:The Outreach Worker provides support, education and helps to ensure the safety of individuals who are found in precarious positions in the downtown core. The staff also work with businesses, security departments and the general public to mentor best practices for interactions with the community, providing overdose response and naloxone training. There will be teams consisting of a nurse and outreach worker.With the support of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse or paramedic, the Outreach Worker will deliver harm reduction supplies, education and support on safer drug use, prevention of drug poisoning and take-home naloxone distribution, sexual health and provide referrals to other health & social services. The team will respond to drug poisonings as necessary.This job may be physically demanding with many hours of walking per day. (Depending on the team)KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists medical staff with overdose and other medical emergencies at the direction of the medical staff, including the administration of naloxone as required.
  • Seeks out opportunities to provide peer-to-peer counselling, treatment options and referrals.
  • Provides overdose prevention education, encourages individuals to partake in take home naloxone (THN) training, completes THN training and distributes kits as required.
  • Provides education and counselling on safer substance use, sexual health and other high-risk behaviors.
  • Ensure that COVID-19 infection control standards are maintained.
  • Works with businesses, security teams and the general public to teach and mentor good ways of interacting with the community members and teach drug poisoning response including naloxone administration.
  • Maintains stats through a digital system
  • Performs other related duties, as required
QUALIFICATIONS:Education:
  • Must have current BLS certification
Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:
  • Able to work non-judgmentally with people who may be using substances within a Harm Reduction/ Treatment- Oriented framework
  • Knowledge, experience or willingness to learn of substance use and culture, overdose prevention, sex trade, STIs and blood borne pathogens, and inner city life
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in an Indigenous cultural context
  • Familiarity with local community resources (e.g. substance use, social services, justice)
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting and in partnership with other organizations and businesses, with a solutions orientation
  • Flexibility, creativity, enthusiasm and non-judgmental attitude
  • Self-directed
  • Ability to be politically astute and non-confrontational
Experience:
  • Lived experience of marginalization, substance use, discrimination is preferred
  • Experience working with marginalized communities is an asset
