VER Strategic CommunicationsCompetition No. - A114947915Closing Date - May 31, 2022This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).In accordance with the Temporary Librarian, Administrative and Professional Staff (TLAPS) Agreement, this position has an annual salary range of $65,906 to $109,772. This position is not eligible for benefits.   • Provide strategic leadership and counsel with other communicators and leaders within the portfolio (Faculty of Native Studies staff, researchers and Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity portfolio)
  • Advises U of A editorial and engagement development for alignment with the Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity portfolio and institutional strategic direction
  • Working with academic or administrative leaders to develop and implement a communication and marketing strategic plan that supports Faculty and University objectives and aligns with the strategic direction of Centers of Expertise in the External Relations portfolio
  • Developing and/or implementing strategies and key messages to enhance the reputation, heighten the awareness, address multiple audiences, and deliver a coherent and unified message to internal and external audiences
  • Keeping abreast of relevant issues and trends that could affect brand and reputation. Advises leadership on reputational risks and implications of current or proposed actions
  • Acting as a key point of contact for issues management planning and rapid response messaging for the assigned area(s) to deal with critical events as they arise, working closely with Centers of Expertise
  • Identifying, building, maintaining and leveraging relationships with internal and external stakeholders at the local, provincial, national and international level to further area interests
  • Promoting a positive image of both the University by ensuring the coverage of important news stories, funding announcements, student/faculty/staff/alumni/donor profiles, research discoveries, partnerships and philanthropic support which highlight the area’s research, teaching or other service to the community
  • Acting as editor with all unit-level communication mediums. Writes, edits and/or reviews communications materials (e.g. articles, speeches, faculty/area publications)
  • Supporting the Centers of Expertise with story sourcing, content production, campaign, events and other initiatives as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3-5 years of experience in a communications, marketing or journalism in a complex organization
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of EDI and commitment to engaging with these initiatives; a track record of success in moving forward these agendas in meaningful and impactful ways
  • Demonstrates experience with supporting Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity strategies
  • Expertise in multi-stakeholder communication
  • Deep understanding of all communication channels
  • Solid commitment to consultation, collaboration and communication
  • High degree of professionalism and judgment
  • Strong research, communication skills
  • Solid understanding of academic culture, the university’s policies and procedures and its organizational structure
  • Deep understanding of equity, diversity and inclusivity, histories of Indigenous peoples in this place called Canada, and the role of Universities in Truth and Reconciliation
