Your Opportunity:Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS), delivering high-quality, diagnostic laboratory and point-of-care testing (POCT) services to Albertans across the province. APL is seeking a full time, permanent Clinical Biochemist. The successful candidate will join a team of clinical biochemists and general pathologists at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, and will also remotely work with a separate team of clinical biochemists to support POCT in the province. This position will report to the North Sector Medical Director and Clinical Biochemistry Section Chief, as well as the Provincial POCT Medical Lead.Description:Key responsibilities: Support clinical biochemistry testing in the rapid response labs of Grand Prairie Regional Hospital and Northern Lights Regional Health Centre (Fort McMurray). Oversee and support POCT, including working on teams that support provincial program development, instrument troubleshooting, quality improvement, and quality assurance activities. Represent and support Northern Alberta on regional/rural provincial initiatives and participation in POCT, clinical biochemistry and pre-analytical working groups. Contribute to the team that reviews and approves clinical referred out testing for Northern Alberta. Note: this position is based in Edmonton but requires periodic travel within Alberta. Selected accountabilities: Liaise with clinical users of the clinical biochemistry laboratory and POCT services about medical and operational issues and decisions, including participation in the on-call service. Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of instrumentation, LIS and middleware software, and testing methodology in collaboration with other disciplines. Support safety, quality control and quality assurance programs for clinical biochemistry and POCT. Provide input about resources required for laboratory and POCT medical and operational planning. Participate in provincial quality assurance activities, such as monitoring and improving test utilization and adherence to POCT program requirements. Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to enable and integrate clinical research. Teach, mentor and supervise laboratory medicine learners (e.g. undergraduate students, medical residents, and clinical fellows, laboratory staff, colleagues). Provide input on workforce planning, recruitment, quality improvement and strategic planning for Clinical Biochemistry and POCT.
