Job Description

SCI PhysicsCompetition No. - A107848829Closing Date - Dec 20, 2022The experimental astroparticle physics group at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) is looking for up to two excellent postdoctoral fellows to join our exciting research program in IceCube, P-ONE and developments towards future photodetection technology. IceCube is the largest neutrino telescope in operation, detecting atmospheric and cosmic neutrinos in the Antarctic ice. P-ONE is the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Explorer, a proposed new neutrino detector off the coast of Canada, which seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of the site for an eventual multi-km3 neutrino telescope. The P-ONE group at the U of A is leading the Canadian efforts towards the design of the trigger systems of the experiment, optical characterization of the sensors, and the study of the physics potential of a neutrino telescope in the Pacific Ocean. The first prototype line of P-ONE is planned to be deployed in 2025, and an eventual detector first phase could be deployed a year later. The successful candidate will take a leading role in developing the physics program and final design of P-ONE.In IceCube, the U of A has a prominent role in the study of atmospheric neutrinos, including measurements oscillation parameters and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The group is also invested in detector calibration efforts of the current detector, as well as prospects for the already funded IceCube Upgrade. The candidate is expected to take a leading role in atmospheric neutrino data analysis in IceCube and contribute in detector calibration and operation tasks. These areas are complemented by a project being carried out at our photodetector lab that seeks to build a hybrid photosensor for astroparticle physics experiments. This research is taking place in collaboration with groups at Université de Sherbrooke and TRIUMF. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to take part in these efforts. The IceCube/P-ONE group currently consists of three professors (Carsten Krauss, Roger Moore and Juan-Pablo Yáñez), one experienced postdoctoral fellows and six graduate students. More graduate student positions are available and we are currently recruiting. Up to six undergraduate students regularly join our group for research termsRequirements and salaryCandidates should have a recent PhD in experimental astroparticle physics, nuclear or particle physics, or in a closely related field. The appointment can be extended for up to four years, starting with a two year contract and renewing subject to funding. The salary starts at $53,000 CAD per annum and it is adjusted with qualifications and experience. A successful candidate would be expected to take on the position by June 2023.Suitable candidates can be considered for the IPP Connect Postdoctoral Fellowship (time sensitive). Contact Prof. Yañez directly for details.Physics at the University of AlbertaThe U of A is home to a large astroparticle physics group with access to extensive in-house technical infrastructure and expertise, including a professional machine shop with user space and an electronics shop. Group members also benefit from interaction with researchers in related fields, such as ATLAS, SNO+, PICO, NEWS-G, DEAP-3600 and DarkSide, where U of A groups have significant involvement. For more information on astroparticle physics at the U of A:https://www.ualberta.ca/physics/research/centre-for-particle-physicsResearch at the University of Alberta:https://www.ualberta.ca/researchThe city of Edmonton:https://exploreedmonton.com/IceCube:https://icecube.wisc.edu/P-ONE:https://www.pacific-neutrino.org/To ApplyApplicants should include a detailed CV, a brief statement of research interests, and arrange to have at least two letters of reference.
