Job Description

The Old Strathcona Youth Society (OSYS) is currently seeking an individual to fill the position of a full-time Program Team Leader.The Old Strathcona Youth Society is a front-line, multi-agency team that has been established to contribute support, information and resources to high risk and street involved youth 14 to 24 years old in the Old Strathcona area of Edmonton. The “Co-op” strives to be a flexible, street-level resource concerned with securing the safety, self-worth and dignity of youth.Reports to:Executive DirectorRole:The Program Team Leader is responsible for the direct supervision of and delivery of services/programs to youth at the OSYS. The Program Team Leader works in partnership with the Executive Director to provide supervision to staff, students, service providers and volunteers and ensures appropriate service/programs to youth. This is a full time and permanent position with health benefits, vacation and career and training opportunities.Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of youth at the OSYS. Deliver services and programs to youth in a non-judgmental manner, while demonstrating a commitment to providing services that are in the best interest of these youth.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, recruit, train and supervise staff and volunteers. Provide ongoing evaluation of performance.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, provide supervision and support to student practicum placements. Participate in ongoing evaluation of performance.
  • Assess youths’ needs, issues and resources utilizing a range of techniques including: observation of youth, information from other service providers, staff, volunteers, community agencies and discussions with youth.
  • Provide follow-up with youth in appropriate circumstances.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in the conduct of all activities.
  • Effective and efficient crisis intervention with youth.
  • Demonstrates personal initiative in program planning and delivery, consulting with colleagues and Executive Director when appropriate.
  • As may be directed and/or indicated, participates effectively in community and inter agency functions as an OSYS representative.
  • Develop, maintain and promote community resources and a referral network appropriate for youth service users.
  • Within all community-based activity, seeks to improve the knowledge of and responsiveness of community, institutions, groups and individuals to youth their needs, issues, abilities and circumstance.
  • Develop an understanding of issues effecting vulnerable Edmonton youth, Urban Indigenous youth and LGBTQ+ youth, including Intergenerational trauma, suicide, harm reduction, FASD, and poverty
  • Serves as a strong advocate on behalf of OSYS and its youth.
  • Actively seeks opportunity to enhance personal knowledge and skills.
  • Adheres to OSYS policies and practices and to own professional ethics.
  • Participates in any and all fundraising activities as a representative and advocate of OSYS.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a university/college program in a relevant specialized area in related field of study (i.e., Children/Youth work, sociology, social work, social services). An alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, and is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint – data collection.
  • Ability to learn new software systems quickly
  • Current and satisfactory criminal background check with a vulnerable sector search is required as a condition of employment.
  • Have a strong understanding of services and resources for youth in Edmonton.
  • The ability to work effectively with youth ages 14-24 years and has a solid understanding of the circumstances of vulnerable youth living in Edmonton Alberta.
  • Ability to work some evenings or weekends when necessary to meet the needs of programs and the larger Youth Initiatives team.
  • Valid Alberta driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
  • Valid and current first aid and CPR Level C with AED is required for this role. Training can be provided to the successful candidate.
Experience:
  • 5 years’ experience working with vulnerable youth in a community based setting.
  • 3-5 years working with youth, ideally in a leadership role.
  • 1-2 years in a leadership role
  • Traditional Indigenous knowledge would be an asset
  • Suicide intervention and crisis intervention training would also be an asset.
