Job Description

Highlights of the jobWe are looking for one (1) full-time permanent Project Controls Manager to join our team based out of Edmonton or Calgary, AB. The working arrangement for this position is predominately “hybrid work” based out of Edmonton or Calgary, with occasional travel within Canada and the USA.The Project Controls Manager is accountable for the advanced-level analysis and monitoring of project progress including schedules, costing, controls, safety and recovery. As an expert in Project Management, Controls and Delivery models, this position is accountable for setting Project Control standards and processes for all types of Commercial Services projects from inception through commissioning and initial Operations. The position will be accountable for the preparation of project control strategies for projects under development and supporting the Project Development processes within Commercial Services.What you’d be responsible forReporting to Senior Manager, Project Management, the Project Controls Manager is accountable for but not limited to:

  • Providing input to the Project Management plans and directions, ensuring an appropriate understanding of the business strategy as related to Project Controls.
  • Leading the development, implementation, review and continuous improvement of project management, project controls and document management standards, processes and tools to ensure compliance with policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Managing the Project Controls teams consisting of Control controllers, schedulers and document controllers.
  • Providing advanced level coaching and mentoring to Project Managers in the areas of project monitoring, controls, optimization, scheduling, costing, document and contractual management.
  • Applying expertise in project management and project controls knowledge to complex project management, costing and scheduling issues; assist with project recovery plans and proactive project planning.
  • Assisting Senior Managers and Project Managers in the preparation of monthly project reporting:
    • Developing project governance, processes, methods, tracking and reporting templates and dashboards.
    • Reviewing monthly detailed project reports and schedules from contractors and analysis for accuracy and performance.
    • Identifying resource requirements for future projects.
  • Developing, implementing and reviewing plans for the execution of an assigned projects, respecting the vision and values of the Major Projects Team.
  • Supporting the Commercial Services team through the business development and project development phases and provide project controls input as required.
  • Demonstrating a high performance, high discipline, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented, easy to do business with manner of working.
What’s required to be successful
  • Engineering degree or technology diploma supported by over ten years of experience in project controls and /or project management is required.
  • Industry-related experience related to water, wastewater or industrial process systems is an asset.
  • Over ten years of project management related experience which includes providing high-level project control support.
  • Project management training with Project Management Professional designation desired.
  • Proven track record in project controls leadership and ability to develop, control and recover projects of all sizes resulting in significant cost and time savings.
  • Cost management designation desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience of alternate project delivery such as P3 and design build and an understanding of the requirements of a contractor and owner in project controls context.
  • Excellent project management skills encompassing engineering, procurement and construction management.
  • Knowledge of construction safety requirements.
  • Water and wastewater or industrial process knowledge is an asset.
  • Water and wastewater or industrial systems engineering design and construction knowledge is an asset
  • Advanced level expertise in various project controls tools including MS Project and Primavera P6, Oracle, Excel, SharePoint, risk (such as @risk software) and contingency determination tools, project costing and recovery tools.
  • Advanced level expertise in document and contract management tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
