Join the Supporting Indigenous Language Revitalization (SILR) initiative in the Office of the Vice-Provost (Indigenous Programming and Research) to lead the Research team as a Research Associate. Our team is searching for someone who is passionate and dedicated to making a difference.The University of Alberta has been working towards implementing the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action in thoughtful, meaningful and sustainable ways. The goal is to ensure that the University of Alberta is a welcoming and safe environment for Indigenous students, staff, faculty and community members and that programs and strategies reflect the institutional commitment to engaging Indigenous perspectives.This position has a term length of four years and offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at: Faculty & Staff Benefits.The Research Associate will lead the research design and delivery of building capacity for community-led Indigenous language revitalization in Canada project. This position will play a central role in establishing the research program objectives, determining the most appropriate methodology, in carry-out research activities related to Indigenous language revitalization and well-being, coaching Indigenous graduate students and grant development and new research projects. Underpinning this project is an explicit recognition that Indigenous communities have sovereignty over their language preservation and revitalization goals, programs, and data.In this community-led, participatory project, the University of Alberta will leverage its history of community engagement and partnerships with diverse stakeholders to provide strategic support to Indigenous Nations and/or communities for substantially enhancing their capacity to successfully carry out their own language revitalization efforts through the coming generations.As a complement to the many community-focused initiatives of this project, U of A will also leverage its capabilities in research to carry out a research study on the intersections of Indigenous language vitality and personal and community well-being. This is an under-researched topic, but it has significant implications for policymaking and investment strategy in this area.Reporting to the Executive Director (Indigenous Programming and Research), the Research Associate will lead research activities and identify key research objectives that provide different perspectives on the interconnectedness of language and well-being in an Indigenous context. These objectives will be investigated by a research team, including Indigenous graduate students. Supervision, coaching and guidance, mentoring will be a focus of this position, including the development of a systematic literature review, reports, research and policy briefs, academic research papers, presentation and publications. Preparing proposals for new research activities is required, including assisting in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals.DutiesProject Management

  • Lead the research aspects of the Project, established clear research objectives, and design methodology
  • Recruitment and hiring of additional support staff, including Graduate Research Assistants
  • Conducting related administrative duties at a managerial level (including human resource, budgetary, equipment management and/or facility and space planning)
  • Coordinates and communicates with Graduate Research Assistants regularly
  • Identifies and tracks project milestones
  • Ensures timely and accurate production of literature reviews, reports, papers, presentation and publications
  • Quarterly e-scan for funding opportunities from government and foundation sources
Relationships
  • Stewards relationships with all stakeholders and partners towards successful and productive completion of project goals
  • Engagement with steering committee and advisory council quarterly
  • Execute strategies to develop and maintain relationships internally and externally
  • Liaise and build relationships with community partners
  • Supervise, guide and coach graduate students
  • Supervise casual support staff for specific research related activities such as knowledge mobilization
Research and Reporting
  • Ensures timely and regular reporting of progress towards project research milestones to the Executive Director, steering committee and advisory council
  • Interprets data and information and provides direction regarding progress, analysis and issues.
  • Leads the planning and development of new research projects
  • Determines the most appropriate methodology in carrying-out identified research goals
  • Design data collection protocols and standards focused on Indigenous communities in Canada
  • Participates in the writing of research papers, preparation of presentations and publications
  • Presents research results in meetings, seminars, conferences and/or related settings
  • May be a co-applicant for research funding if stipulated in the appointment letter
  • Supervising data collection activities and analysis of research results
  • Setting research program objectives (involved in the planning of future research)
  • Conducting related administrative duties at a managerial level
Advocacy and Sustainability
  • Develop a strategic plan to focus on the sustainability of the project
  • Develop knowledge mobilization strategies to raise awareness of Indigenous Language Revitalization
  • Collaborate with External Relations and Government Relations to identify government funding opportunities and strategies
  • Prepares proposals for new research activities, including assisting in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (minimum) in an administration and/or research-related field, Phd in a related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of four years of relevant project direction and administration work experience, preferably with Indigenous communities, organizations, and educational institutions
  • Preference will be given to an Indigenous language speaker
  • Advanced research skills with experience of using UofA library online publication databases and eJournals is preferred
  • Knowledge of administrative structures, policies and procedures within the University of Alberta, as well as University of Alberta systems
  • Written and oral communication skills, organizational and interpersonal skills in order to provide advice and direction
  • Proven computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications
  • Able to work with minimal supervision
In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has an approximate appointment of four years and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $74,084 to $101,888.
