Job Description

Standard General Edmonton is looking for Steel and/or Rubber Roller Operators for seasonal full-time positions. Paver operating experience is considered an asset, but we are willing to train candidates with limited paver operating experience should they be proficient in other equipment operating and have a solid understanding of paving processes.The Paver Operator’s main purpose is to efficiently operate various models of asphalt pavers to maintain an acceptable level of workmanship and productivity as well as to promote and participate in the Goal Zero initiative.Key Responsibilities:

  • Positively participate in the Company safety program and adhere to all safety requirements.
  • Operate valves to regulate flow of material at a specific rate.
  • Signaling Asphalt Paving Machine Operator to start and stop paving machine.
  • Observe distribution of material over road surface to ensure uniform distribution.
  • Use depth gauge to verify depth of specifications of compacted asphalt.
  • Operate paver and control asphalt delivery and placement to mitigate mix segregation.
  • Support screed personnel to maintain required asphalt thickness and smoothness.
  • Discuss and plan daily project paving procedures and goals to maximize productivity and workmanship.
  • Operate other equipment and perform groundwork as required.
Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of paving equipment and paving process.
  • Knowledge of proper machine startup and shutdown.
  • Knowledge/ experience with setup, operation and maintenance of paver auger feed and automatic grade control system.
  • Willing to learn and take direction.
  • Able to perform physical/manual labour for extended periods of time.
  • Able to communicate well with co-workers.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license (class 5).
  • Able to work under pressure in some situations.
  • Able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
  • Able and willing to work overtime as required.
  • Must be reliable.
  • Must exhibit a strong work ethic.
  • Must have strong regard for ethics.
  • Ability to meet and adhere to all safety requirements and applicable safety policies, including pre-employment drug, alcohol, and medical testing.
  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain active membership with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 955, if not currently a member.
Experience/ Education:
  • Paver operating experience is considered an asset.
  • Understanding or knowledge of the paving industry and processes is considered a major asset.
