The focus is to build a safe and healthy living space using harm reduction, relationship building, and community development philosophies to support tenants in finding long-term stable housing. The Sakhita Kikinaw Support Worker will work under the direction of the Team Lead Cultural Coordinator to provide a compassionate approach and active support in skill development and community engagement. This will include coaching, educating, and supporting participants in daily living skills, managing tenancy, and fostering a sense of community.KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop schedules & activities, in conjunction with the resident manager, to provide or facilitate programing to bring people together and build stronger relationships.
  • Provide support to residents as needed and liaise with support workers as required.
  • Make connections and foster relationships with external stakeholders, organizations, & agencies to bring in programing and encourage volunteering and employment.
  • Support in facilitating cultural activities and ceremonies.
  • Support in processing referrals, intakes, partnership meetings, case conferencing, committees, etc.
  • Assess residents’ barriers and needs to assist, support, and advocate for them.
  • Coordinate referrals to other support services, that may include: mental health supports, addiction treatment, family doctors, income supports, budgeting and/or financial literacy, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Housing Services Manager, which may include: supervising students, organizing program events outside of regularly scheduled work hours, co-facilitating program meetings and/or resident meetings, etc.
Qualifications:Education: Post-secondary education in Human Services. Candidate without education but having a combination of post-secondary education and related experience will be considered.Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:
  • Ability to work in a highly stressful and ever-changing environment.
  • Must have excellent boundaries.
  • Mental resiliency is key.
  • An understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and ceremonies.
  • Able to solve problems quickly, creatively, and ethically with residents.
  • Proven ability to work in a respectful & client-centered manner.
  • Understands how to use de-escalation techniques.
  • Works with initiative, commitment, and enthusiasm.
  • Able to identify and maximize relevant opportunities.
Experience:
  • Experience working with vulnerable people.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends, and services particularly within, but not limited to the urban Indigenous population is essential.
  • Good working knowledge of Alberta Supports and other resources available within Edmonton.
  • Criminal Record and Child Intervention Checks (results will be reviewed on a case by case basis)
