Job Description

Drill and Blast Specialist (Underground)

About the roleWe are looking for a Drill and Blast Specialist to supervise and coordinate the Technical Drill and Blast activities with the primary focus on underground production, development, secondary break drill and blast designs as well as life of mine infrastructure and service hole drill designs.This role is a great opportunity to be at the forefront of production in a unique world class underground block caving operation in Mongolia. The role will play an integral part in employee development to ensure 95% nationalization of the workforce.Working 4 week on, 2 weeks off International FIFO roster and reporting to the Superintendent Drill & Blast – Technical Services, you will be:
  • Directly managing Senior Drill and Blast Engineers to ensure that all technical drill and blast work for production, development and secondary break is delivered in accordance to schedule
  • Coaching, mentoring and training, Senior Drill and Blast Engineers to facilitate the transfer of skills, knowledge and standards of best practice
  • Working collaboratively with external stakeholders to plan all scheduled drill and blast technical work
  • Leading the drill and blast team in ensuring compliance to the Explosive Management Standards on site
  • Managing the technical processes and standards relevant to underground drill and blast operations
  • Leading Drill and Blast Technical projects for operational readiness, ramp up and full production phases of the project
  • Ensuring the safety of all team members and that risks are identified, mitigated and managed
  • Assisting in identifying risks and working to ensure risk mitigation strategies are put in place.
What you will bring
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering (or similar)
  • At least 8 years’ relevant experience in Underground Mining (experience with Block or Sub-Level Caving will be highly regarded)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Longhole Drilling, Jumbo Drilling and Secondary Break operations in an underground mining environment
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Drill and Blast Design (preferably Deswik)
  • Extensive knowledge of Underground Blasting, Explosives Transport, Handling and Storage Systems and processes
  • Experience with managing technical projects in a mining operation
  • Experience with training, mentoring and coaching other employees
It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Previous overseas work experience
  • Knowledge of IKON III Electronic Blasting Systems
  • Previous experience with Deswik or Vulcan CAD Software Packages

The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life.
