We support students, parents, teachers, and administrators from Early Childhood Services (ECS) through Grade 12.The French Assessment branch leads the design, development, administration, and scoring of Grade 3 Student Learning Assessments in French Literacy; Grades 6 and 9 French Language Arts and Francais Provincial Achievement Tests; and Grade 12 French Language Arts and Francais diploma exams. The branch is also responsible for the French translation, editing and validation of all other provincial assessment related documents (print and online).Share your talent, your leadership and your success as you shape the future of education in Alberta.RoleThis role offers a unique opportunity to be a part of the French Assessment Branch and create high quality French versions of Diploma Examinations, Provincial Achievement Tests and Student Learning Assessments, and other Provincial Assessment Sector educational material (print and digital - audio, written, and digital), for Alberta schools, school boards and parents, to enhance student learning and achievement, and to contribute to the quality of education in Alberta.As a French Translator, you will be working with a team of experienced team members in some of the following areas:Translating from English to French a wide variety of Diploma Examinations, Provincial Achievement Tests, Student Learning Assessments and other Provincial Assessment Sector educational material for18 subjects in 4 grade levels.

  • You will ensure that French versions are linguistically, psychometrically and culturally equivalent to English versions.
  • Providing expertise in French and English to translate all aspects of documents (print and digital audio, written, and digital) to a French equivalent, ensuring that language used is appropriate and terminology is subject specific and in accordance with approved French Programs of Study and textbooks.
  • Managing and prioritizing the entire translation process from conception to the delivery of a final print-ready product or web posting.
  • Representing Provincial Assessment Sector on Technical Review Committees (TRC) and/or Technical Advisory Committees (TAC) for Diploma Exams (Grade 12), Provincial Achievement Tests (Grades 6 and 9) and for Student Learning Assessments (Grade 3). These committees/working groups, comprised of teachers, validate the exams/tests prior to the final version, and recommend changes to those exams/tests. Also making final decisions on required changes through discussions and consultations.
  • You will work with desktop publishers and graphic artists, as needed, to complete changes and then sign off the document. The Director, French Assessment Branch also signs off on all documents before they are submitted for printing. However, the Director relies heavily on the language expertise of the Translation/Editorial/Writing team for accuracy and integrity of exams.
  • Work within the boundaries of the Master Schedule, which defines timelines and deadlines for all exams and tests, Provincial Assessment Sector standards, legislation policies and guidelines (e.g., FOIP, Standards for Educational and Psychological testing, Copyright), and industry standards.
  • Provide voice talent for audio versions of various assessments.
Role ContinuedContributes to Provincial Assessment Sector standards for all exams/tests and related material, consistent with departmental policies and of interest to readers.
  • Assists in the development, enhancement and implementation of French translation and editing processes in consultation with Assessment Specialists, Examiners and Francophone and French Immersion teachers, including process documentation (e.g., glossaries, style guides, and terminology)
  • Assists in the development of terminology banks in order to standardize translations to ensure consistency and accuracy in translation services.
  • Advises the Director, French Assessment, of issues related to translation services, and recommend appropriate solutions.
QualificationsEducation and ExperienceRequired:
  • A university degree in a related field (e.g. Translation, French Literature)
  • A minimum of four years related experience along with fluency in both French and English languages (written and verbal)
  • Familiarity with word processing/computer software such as Microsoft Office and linguistic databases for terminology research
  • A cover letter in both French and English is required. This will be used to assess your French and English written communication skills as well as your attention to detail.
